Very interesting ^^^ discussion about Israel and quite a significant change from this board just five years ago when Zionist enthusiasm was unrestrained and any dissent labelled anti-Semitic.

Time changes everything. The IDF jet that was shot down this week was the first such combat loss in over twenty years. Israel hasn't fought a significant military conflict in over 40 years. The draftees that make up the Israeli armed forces haven't experienced war in their lifetimes. The IDF celebrates is glorious past but the present is quite different.

What today's IDF draftees have experienced is endless, isolated terrorist attacks and the demoralizing brutality of repressing Palestinian families in the occupied territories. These things are destructive to military morale. Changes in Israeli society have also made IDF morale lower. There has been bitter backlash about the extreme Orthodox who are draft exempt, the government has been forced to modify those privileges a bit, but the average young Israeli is secular and skeptical, if not resentful, of the extremist minority whose disproportionate political influence within Likud is behind the provocation of the "settlements." Like the USA, Israel is having trouble with its religious right.

Since 1977, abortion is legal, so Israel is not ruled by their religious right............ :)
