TransCanada Corp's existing Keystone pipeline has leaked substantially more oil, and more often, in the United States than indicated in risk assessments the company provided to regulators before the project began operating in 2010, according to documents reviewed by Reuters. The Canadian company is now seeking to expand the pipeline system linking Alberta's oil fields to US refineries with its proposed Keystone XL project, which has President Trump's backing. The existing 2,147-mile Keystone system from Hardisty, Alberta, to the Texas coast has had three significant leaks in the United States since it began operating in 2010, including a 5,000-barrel spill this month in rural South Dakota, and two others, each about 400 barrels, in South Dakota in 2016 and North Dakota in 2011. To give some perspective here... an Olympic size swimming pool holds the equivalent of 16,000 barrels of water. So these spills combined represent less than 1/2 the volume of your local swimming pool. |

Not much then? Great! Why don't we gather what little spills and drop it on your property. Edited by Coast2coast, Feb 15 2018, 06:23 PM.

No problem as long as you clean it up and I am compensated fairly for the inconvenience and the use of my property for your infrastructure

Not me. Get the owners of that oil to clean it up and compensate you for any damage to your property and any lose of life to pets that got into it. The litigation that will yield an inadequite settlement should only take about a decade or so. Better lawyer up because the oil company sure has their lawyers along with freinds in Congress ready to oppose your lawsuit. |

Another perspective; Why is a relatively new pipeline already leaking and how can we not assume that it will get much worse ? |

Keystone has delivered upwards of 500,000 barrels of oil per day, every day, for the past 7 years and you are talking about spills totaling less than 6,000 barrels. 365 * 7 = 2555 days 2555 days * 500,000 Barrels = 1,277,500,000 Barrels delivered since construction (1.27 Billion) 6000 Barrel spill / 1.27B Barrel delivered = 0.0000047244 That's how small the problem is...less than one half of one millionth of the oil delivered by the pipeline has spilled. Go find another cause that's more worthy of your time. |

It looks like the wet brain is kicking in Mr Stout. Better lay off that booze. Smarten up and smoke weed instead. Edited by _g R_, Feb 15 2018, 08:21 PM.

Members of South Dakota's Public Utilities Commission told Reuters last week they could revoke TransCanada's operating permit if an initial probe of last week's spill shows it violated the terms of the license. Those terms include requirements for standards for construction, regular inspections of pipeline infrastructure, and other environmental safeguards. "They testified that this is going to be a state-of-the-art pipeline," said one of the commissioners, Gary Hanson. "We want to know the pipeline is going to operate in a fashion that is safe and reliable. So far it's not going well." |
