The Big Government Policies Of The Democratic Party Have Been Disastrous For Native Peoples

So you are a Native American or native Alaskan or Native Hawaiian. You are thinking about supporting President Donald Trump and the Republican Party? The Democrats and the main stream media would say you are nuts. They don’t want Natives thinking for themselves and they don’t want natives knowing what the Republican Party in the era of Trump stands for when it comes to Native peoples.

More than 5 million Americans identify as either Native American or Alaskan native – that is almost 2% of the population. Another 560,000 identify as Native Hawaiians. This large, and largely ignored, demographic know more than any other group in America just how dangerous a reliance on big government can be, which should make Native peoples a natural target for the Republican Party of President Trump to make inroads with.

Arguably, no group of voters in America can speak more to the abject failures of government than native peoples.

More than one in four native people lives in poverty today.

Only 17 percent of native people have a bachelor’s degree.

The national graduation rate for native peoples is less than 50 percent, while the graduation for white students is over 76 percent.

The suicide rate among native people is nearly double the national average.

Alcoholism mortality rates are a staggering 514 percent higher than the national rate.

As grim and depressing as these statistics are, they are even worse among native peoples living on reservations.
Only liberals can choose not to go down the road to widespread, systematic violence.

But it's not that Republicans actually want to do anything to help native peoples, they just want to point out the Democrats efforts haven't eliminated all the problems.

It seems to be the same old armchair quarterbacking where the guy handing out the criticism couldn't even get a spot on the field.

This would all change if squaw Warren runs for president and gets elected.

No one is holding a gun to Native Americans telling them to support the Democratic Party; they will get no sympathy from me.

The problem Republicans have is that they want to push a individual philosophy on a tribal society. As for Big Government policies, what the Tribes want is pure and simple...Obey all Treaty Stipulations, we don't want equal status as "States", we are Sovereign Nations enclosed by the United States. The relationship the United States has with the Tribes is one of one nation-state to another...not Individual States in dealing with the Tribes, we deal as equals with the Federal Government in conjunction with the US Constitution, specifically the Supremacy Clause. We want nothing more then what is due to us in terms of aid, assistance, or cooperation.

My ancestors were murdered and their property stolen because of the state government. Yet I don’t demand aid and assistance. The best thing is to let history be history.

Pretty much that is the R’s canned response most everything the Democrats attempt to do to help anyone get a leg up.

At the same time, all the R’s do is pick the pockets of the groups they rob.

The dems War on Poverty is now approaching 20 TRILLION dollars of spending and has done nothing but create more government dependent slugs. The dems "best program", social security is the largest Ponzi scheme in global history. Our once proud Native American people have been reduced to drunks, cigarette salesman and casino workers.

Give a liberal unlimited sums of other peoples money and you will get an unmitigated disaster in return.

Govt programs to help people 'get a leg up' are designed as poverty traps which is why we have the same poverty rate as we did when the programs were created. They do however create some jobs for the lesser among us(ie Democrats) that the rest of us get to pay salary and benefits for.

Your ancestors (religious really aren't ancestors) were members of a religious cult chased out of Illinois and Missouri in no small part because many suspected them of fraud.

They then in a bid to keep non-Mormons out of Utah perpetrated a massacre of civilian settlers and didn't have the guts to even do it as white Mormons, they masqueraded as the local Tribe and told the federal government they did it.

My people are a sovereign nation covered under the US Constitution.

The most loyal segment of the democrat base is people on SNAP, welfare, SSDI, Medicaid or other government programs.

This article is laughable. That problems still exist for natives in spite of assistance doesn't support that they'd be better off without it. "Populist-conservative policies" offer no mechanism to improvement.

That said, the "war on poverty" is intended to make things less miserable for poor people, not get them to being long term better off. Actually growing wages requires effort and incentive from both sides. We could have an interesting discussion about what policies would actually do that. I suspect they would not fit neatly into either parties current platform, though some of the Democrats are at least realistic about the need for new training and sometimes relocation to get new jobs vs idealism about "bringing back" manufacturing jobs that no longer exist.

Structuring assistance to be temporary, and scaling it so as not to disincentivize working part time would be a good start.
