WORLD NEWS FEBRUARY 24, 2018 / 8:55 AM / UPDATED 12 HOURS AGO

Ellen Francis, Michelle Nichols

BEIRUT/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council on Saturday demanded a 30-day truce across Syria as rescuers in the country’s eastern Ghouta region said bombing had not let up long enough for them to count bodies during one of the bloodiest air assaults of the seven-year war.

Shortly after the unanimous vote by the 15-member council, warplanes struck a town in eastern Ghouta, the last rebel enclave near Syria’s capital, an emergency service and a war monitoring group said. Warplanes have pounded the region for seven straight days while residents holed up in basements.

American resolution, demanding Russians and Syrians to stop bombing ISIS and Al-Qaida failed, unfortunately :)

But a compromise was found, finally Russia agreed not to bomb US spondored moderate terrorists :)
But still ISIS and Al-Qaida will remain targets, in Gouta too..
Turks also have no intention to stop their advance on Kurds...

Thousands of well-armed rebel fighters are in Syria’s Ghouta
Quote:

BEIRUT (AP) — The Syrian government’s battle to recapture the rebel-held eastern suburbs of Damascus is likely to be a long and bloody fight because of the presence of thousands of battle-hardened fighters who have had years to prepare.

Many of the fighters entrenched in eastern Ghouta are originally from the area and move around using an elaborate network of underground tunnels, giving them an advantage against President Bashar Assad’s forces and their Russian- and Iranian-backed allies.

The territory of some 400,000 residents is the last major opposition-controlled area near Assad’s seat of power, and the rebels have been targeting the capital with volleys of mortar shells, disrupting life in a reminder that they can deprive the city of peace as the government backed by Russia rains down bombs and carnage on the besieged area. If the government retakes eastern Ghouta, only one small pocket south of the capital held by the Islamic State group will remain out of government control.

Moscow is not going to keep tolerating the daily shelling of Damascus by eastern Ghouta militants that recently hit the Russian embassy in Syria, President Vladimir Putin said after meeting Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.
