Scientists say the dream of unlimited clean energy is about to come true

In just 15 years, the U.S. will be producing unlimited amounts of nearly free, completely green energy. Not only would such an energy holy grail mean the end of humanity’s dependence on expensive fossil fuels, it would also be a panacea for climate change.

Amazingly, this is not a science fiction. It’s actually about to become reality if a collaboration between MIT and Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a private company, is to be believed. The collaborators announced Friday in the journal Nature that they believe they are on the verge of cracking the code to nuclear fusion — and it could be commercially viable in just 15 years, according to The Guardian.

Read the story.

Amazing stuff. I had suspected that nuclear fusion would be the elixir of our energy problems, but had not realized how much progress we've made. Once we achieve this incredible technological breakthrough, the next project should be finding a way to toss liberalism/socialism into the trash heap of history, ...at which point we will be approaching, ....paradise-on-earth. :)

If true solar panels and windmills will go the way of the dinosaurs. Glad we didn't invest billions upon billions into them like the Chinese did...

From a geopolitical standpoint say goodbye to oppressive states that rely on oil revenues. It's nothing but great news.

Big oil doesn't have a say, besides oil is scarcely used to generate electricity. Have they stopped EV's, solar panels, wind turbines, nuclear power?

Stop talking silly..

Big Oil would buy up and bury any technology that could compete with their global monopoly

Means nothing, they can't stop the private sector. You cling to conspiracy theories...

Actually the citations for first link is from a credible news site, unlike Brietbart you lot are so fond of referencing. The second link has its own citations. Why call facts as conspiracy theories when proven wrong?

Is there enough nuclear material to make this work worldwide? The amount of nuclear material estimated to still be in the ground is enough to fulfill less than 10% of the worlds' energy needs.

The only thing stopping renewables has been the cost, period. The free market loves cheaper and cleaner so stop sounding like you're hearing voices.

Can your side enjoy good news or is whining a permanent condition?

And the clean energy patents owned by big oil as listed above, obviously.

Fusion, as the name suggests, is the exact opposite of fission. Instead of ripping atoms apart, extremely plentiful atoms like hydrogen are smashed together, giving off helium and a huge amount of energy.

We will never run out of hydrogen.

Then it wouldn't be unlimited clean energy would it? Perhaps you should read the article before posing questions...

Perhaps I did and "things like hydrogen" and "nearly free cheap energy" raised some questions.

Maybe you should read it yourself instead of taking a shot at someone asking questions trying to understand the vauge article you arrogant xxxx.

How many megatons would result from a fusion reactor accident ?
Less than .00001 assuming it was based on more efficient version of current technology. There is no danger of a runaway reaction. The trick is keeping it going without adding more energy than you're producing. There's only a small amount of fuel available at any given moment, so even a full breach wouldn't release much radiation, and would immediately stop fusing.
