Almost 200 people in Jacksonville are accused of scheming to defraud the food stamps system, according to police.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced Operation Half-Back at a Tuesday press conference.

Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams said JSO began investigating businesses suspected of swiping SNAP/EBT food stamp cards and giving out cash in exchange in 2012.

JSO first investigated brick and mortar businesses that were swiping SNAP cards and giving out 50 cents on the dollar in cash.

JSO said as the businesses were brought to justice, investigators found criminals began mobile businesses selling meat, seafood and produce.

These folks need to be thrown under the jail. Those who did business with them should lose their SNAP benefits.

The SNAP program has the potential to do great good and be one of the best dollar for dollar government programs. People who abuse this system should be forever banned from it.

All wastes are bad. Though this is but a drop in the bucket compared to other misuses. Tom Price alone probably misused more than all of these 200 SNAP guys combined on chartered flights.

Jacksonville is not the biggest city nor is Florida the easiest place to pull off this type of fraud.

I imagine LA is probably the worst offender with NYC close behind for this kind of thing.

Really though, while some types of waste are hard to fix this is one that should not be difficult. Simply by making SNAP work the way that WIC does would probably go a long way. Unless they have changed WIC it does not use the EBT cards and has a restricted list of actual food items that it can be used for.

Now, why would you imagine that? ^^^ Have you some evidence or a link to evidence? Perhaps you are suggesting a racial or political factor in assistance programs?

Both cities have over 6 times the population of Jacksonville. Both cities are in states that have easier access to public assistance than Florida.

My guess is that Houston or Chicago would be next behind NYC and LA. Again, primarily based upon population and easy access to assistance combined with so many businesses taking EBT that it is difficult to enforce in any meaningful way.

What is it with liberals always wanting to pull the race card?

Judging people by the color of their skin, eh? Or did your uncle actually ask them all if they're Hispanic? Hmm?

Sheeshh..

1. It's LA, Santa Ana to be exact.
2. LA county has the largest Hispanic population.
3. Santa Ana has more than 80% Hispanics.
4. He doesn't live in a secluded mansion.

The odds are pretty if you have to take a guess.

Over 41 million Americans use the SNAP program. Most of them are children. Do you really think that 200 violators of the rules mean we should close down the program? What sort of economy do we have when 13% of our people don't have enough to eat?

That is just the Tip of the Iceberg...

Probably hundreds of thousands of people doing the same thing... I know people in CT that have done it... and got caught. Same in NYC...

It happens in Every City, Big and Small across the Country... less so in the suburbs...

The numbers are huge...

Trump needs to focus more so on the male vote. He should have nationalized the Boy Scouts when they decided to admit girls.

Up here in New Hampshire we had a large Shaker community in Canterbury. It became evident that a number of poor people were sneaking into their gardens a night and stealing vegetables. The Shaker response: poor people need to eat -- plant more vegetables.

Fraud and theft are not good. Even poor thieves need to eat. The fraud that poor people and crooked merchants use to turn food into cash is not good and should not be tolerated. But anger at the poor should not be allowed to obliterate the charity which more fortunate Americans should feel towards the less fortunate compatriots. Our country is not a zero-sum game.

As long as people are not starving to death, prostrate on the sidewalks begging for food, I seriously doubt that 13% of Americans are hungry...We have never had a good famine like Ethiopia...Perhaps a few children are hungry for the steak and lobster that their momma sold for booze and drug money............. :booboo:

Is there such a thing as a "good famine"? In any event, why am I not surprised at your lack of knowledge on this subject as well as most others:
