National student walkout: Thousands across the U.S. will walk out of class today to protest gun violence

Students across the country are planning mass walkouts Wednesday to mark one month since the high school shooting in Parkland, Fla., and to demand an end to gun violence.

The students will walk out of classrooms at 10 a.m. across time zones for 17 minutes to show solidarity for the 17 killed in the Valentine's Day attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and to make a nationwide appeal for changes in gun legislation.

Students at more than 2,800 schools and colleges have signed up to participate, according to Women’s March Youth EMPOWER, which is helping students coordinate the events.

Organizers are urging students at all schools, from elementary schools to universities, to take part. Even parents, teachers and others are encouraged to walk out of their jobs at 10 a.m.

Students are walking out of the local high school in the town I live in. They have the support of the school administration to do so, from what I have seen and heard.

A tsunami is building and it cuts across a lot of social stations and political opinions.

The young and naive are always liberal, besides, they've been indoctrinated by their liberal union teachers to hate guns, god and America.

I wonder if public schools in Chicago held walkout every week.

I think it's a good thing that students are being pro-active, and taking an interest in participating in the political system.

Political parties that ignore the current attitudes of young people on issues they care about, do so with a risk to their long term future.

Plenty of middle ground, I just find feel good demonstrations to be useless and annoying. Nothing will be accomplished except missing class. This is about as worthless "thoughts and prayers." Do you doubt they were encouraged by their teachers?

As the old adage says, "If you are not a socialist when you are 20 you have no heart, if you are not a conservative when you are 40 you have no brain."

The children should be counted as absent and punished accordingly. Actions have consequences.

Interestingly, gun control is not "liberal". It's recognizing regulation by authority. The republican position is classiclly liberal ("sure, have guns, whatever").

One of the more obvious ways our parties don't align with billing.

I don't see many young people, nor many teachers who "hate America". I do see a lot of old grumpy white guys who claim to love America, but seem to hate many of the people living in it.

I never needed an excuse to skip school in high school...I would not do it to go to a dumb demonstration....I trust the majority of kids will spend their time wisely by just goofing off....The Womens March-Youth empower contributes to the delinquency of minors.............. :nana:

Here is a little fun fact about this silly nonsense. Most of these school shooters turn out to be people who were not part of the "in" groups in school. They are students who other students bullied and made fun of. Then eventually they snap, get a gun and shoot up their tormentors along with some innocent folks.

So, maybe what these high school kids should be doing is taking a good look at their Facebook profiles and their circle of friends. Then they should ask themselves if there is anyone that they have made fun of repeatedly. If these kids really want to fix their high schools they should start by looking in the mirror. Guns have very little to do with it.

As the old adage says, "If you are not a liberal when you are 20 you have no heart, if you are not a conservative when you are 40 you have no brain."
That's an altered quote, often attributed to Churchill, who never said it. Originally

"Celui qui n’est pas républicain à vingt ans fait douter de la générosité de son âme; mais celui qui, après trente ans, persévère, fait douter de la rectitude de son esprit." -- Anselme Batbie 1775 (probably referring to Edmund Burke)
Roughly translated it's:

Not to be a Républicain at twenty is weakness of heart; to be one at thirty is weakness of mind.

Lets see if Dems current strategy of a strong anti-gun platform going into the mid-terms pays-off, apparently it will.

Liberal indoctrination is producing a generation of poorly educated, whinny, entitled socialists who think they deserve free college, free healthcare, an iPhone, free condoms, free abortions .. and a plethora of other goodies. They've also been taught government will protect them, there's no need for guns. Fact is the police do a good job but can only responded after a crime has been committed. I carry a gun and I know the democrats want to take away that right.

There is a reason why I called it an old adage and not a quote of Churchill.

It goes back quite a ways in different forms and is generally accurate. In youth people tend to be more activist minded and sway easily to causes without full understanding of the situation usually. As they get older and learn of life their views moderate and they tend to become more conservative.

As for the topic at hand, this walk out by children who are not old enough to either vote or own firearms in most states is pointless since the truly liberal gun control goals involve confiscation of firearms that can not happen without an amendment to the Constitution.

Bullying their fellow students IS something these children can do something about and if everyone treated their classmates kindly it would probably go a long way to reducing the desires of their classmates to kill them.

This isn't a walk out because the food in the school cafeteria is bland.

These students are reacting to a clear and impassioned issue that concerns them, and there has to be a balance between their First Amendment rights and other responsibilities.

30 years from now, these students will remember voicing their concerns, while the hour they missed in history class would have been forgotten.

Rules are rules. They should be counted absent and punished as appropriate per the guidelines. Nothing more, nothing less.

As for their "protest", it is irrelevant and it is an issue which they can not personally do anything about. The incessant bullying in High School is something these kids can do something about and yet they have not staged a walkout over how shitty they treat their fellow students on a daily basis.

Maybe they should look in the mirror and deal with things that they can actually do something about.
