The Confederacy was absolutely convinced that the Civil War would be quick and relatively easy, with the South able to claim victory because the North wouldn't have the will to fight after it had taken a quick drubbing or two.

Things didn't turn out that way.

I'd suggest not counting your victories before they're won.

While this is true, you also have to remember that had a couple things gone different on one night at Gettysburg then the entire war, nation, and even world might be different.

Had the South won, it may have had global consequences 45 years later depending on how well the South and the North worked together after the peace.

MFAB was not driven by GA.

If GA had his way the kind of stuff that we have on MFAB would not be on the site at all.

That's my point....it was meant as a place for the deplorables aka riff riff aka normals to be corralled... so that the um ...educated adults...could have civilized discussion (without the annoyance of truth bombs blowing their narratives up) ....

He actually never asked for anything like MFAB that I am aware of. What really happened was that certain folks kept posting things that were primarily videos on youtube with some robotic voice reading whatever nonsense it was that they were pushing. Some of that stuff was total, absolute trash and it was moved to UUU where it belonged. There were some though that were not obvious conspiracy theories and that may in fact have held some actual noteworthy content. Unfortunately all of that content was getting tossed in to UUU whether it belonged there or not.

Then, add to that we had been discussing making changes like we recently did no OpEd and the News Boards for a long time but had not been able come to a final decision on that. Youtube content is super hard to verify because even a hack computer person can mess with video content but the video thing was happening more and more and we wanted a home for it that was not UUU.

MFAB was the result of that. It really had zero to do with GA. There is a group of about five or six from both sides of the aisle that caused us to create this. Not by an request, by the type of things they were posting.

Had the South won, it may have had global consequences 45 years later depending on how well the South and the North worked together after the peace.
The Union's population was 18.5 million. The Confederacy's was 5.5 million, 3.5 million of which were slaves.

Plus the Union's industrial base was significantly greater than the Confederacy's. The only way the Confederates would expect to be victorious was to beat the Union so badly on the battlefield that the Union lost the will to continue fighting and sued for peace on the Confederacy's terms.

It is pretty doubtful that as long as Lincoln was in office, that this was going to happen. Lincoln simply wasn't willing to allow battlefield defeats dissuade him from prosecuting the war. It appears that he, if no one else, realized that victory was eventually the Union's to be had, if they simply fought long enough. The South was going to run out of able bodied men and materials long before the Union. And didn't have the resources to successfully occupy the North, even if they manage to eke out a victory.

The South's goal was never to occupy the North and you are correct that the South could not win a war of attrition. They had to win quickly and could have if they had won in Gettysburg. I think you overestimate the North's commitment to war. Had they lost at Gettysburg there is a decent chance that the Army of the Potomac would have dissolved and a very good chance that Lincoln would have lost the 1864 election.

Here is an interesting article on the subject.

From your linked article:

Quote:

As with all "what-if" games of history, not all historians agree with Guelzo's scenarios.

"In the long term, the north had a winning strategy," said Elizabeth Varon, professor of history at the University of Virginia. "They had the numbers and the resources."

Varon notes that while Meade was ousted after Gettysburg, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, was winning victories in the western part of the country, such as Vicksburg.

"The superior of leadership of Lincoln as president, and superior generalship and command harmony of Lincoln and his team in spring of 1864 was decisive," Varon said. "People raise the issue of Southern morale, and it would have been good (with a victory), but the once the Union had a team of generals who worked well with Lincoln and put advantages to bear, you were going to have a Union victory."
