Hennessey VelociRaptor 6X6 First Drive Review: The incredible hulk

Posted Image

Between the rampant exotics and the lurking classics, it takes some seriously special sheetmetal to stand out in car-clogged Malibu. But this triumphantly conspicuous ride is John Hennessey's stab at the already imposing Ford F-150 Raptor, a wicked transmogrification of the offroad-effective 4x4 into an over-the-top six-wheeled, three-axle'd behemoth. And here I am, trying to keep this hulking steed centered in its lane on the gently winding Kanan Dume Road, when a carload of teenagers fills my rearview, dangling dangerously out of their tiny Mazda3 to gawk at my outlandish, $350,000 rig. Look at this thing. Can you blame them?

It is an impressive vehicle. It is not very practical. Basically, it is like some of those F-650 conversion trucks they sell. The only way I would buy one is if I won one of those big lotteries. The only reason I would buy it is so that I could drive it back and forth in front of Al Gore's house playing music very loudly.

The regular Raptor Crew Cab is far more practical on a daily basis.

True...but as you alluded to it's a $350,000 novelty...the market for this truck is the Middle East and oil rich boys playing with their toys on sand dunes....

It's why there was the original Lamborghini LM002

and now the Mercedes AMG G63 6x6

among others....

And I thought my F250 was hard to park.

I used to have an Excursion. Oh man did my wife complain about parking that beast.

Of course when you drive an Excursion you don't worry about "crumple zones" because if you hit a Smart 4-2 or Prius those cars become your crumple zone as they get punted into the next county.

With a curb weight of a little over 6,000 pounds, I don't worry too much about crumple zones.

Basic physics, if you are in any vehicle, you absolutely do not want to get into any crash with another vehicle that has double your mass. You absolutely do not want to get into a side impact crash with a vehicle that has double your mass.
