Illinois county votes to become 'sanctuary county' for gun owners An Illinois county's board voted to make itself a sanctuary for gun owners and to not enforce laws that "unconstitutionally restrict the Second Amendment." The Effingham County Board approved the resolution 8-1 on Monday. Board members said they felt it was necessary to "take a stand" against gun control efforts in the Illinois legislature. LINK |

More local action on the gun issue is the best step forward. Let the voice of the people be heard! |

Will undocumented gun owners be protected? When in doubt I prefer abiding by the law. Any government entity that decides to ignore the laws as written is going down the wrong path. |

More counties have joined the effort... Several rural Illinois counties have taken a stand for gun rights by co-opting a word that conservatives associate with a liberal policy to skirt the law: sanctuary. At least five counties recently passed resolutions declaring themselves sanctuary counties for gun owners – a reference to so-called sanctuary cities such as Chicago that don’t cooperate with aspects of federal immigration enforcement. The resolutions are meant to put the Democratic-controlled Legislature on notice that if it passes a host of gun bills, including new age restrictions for certain weapons, a bump stock ban and size limit for gun magazines, the counties might bar their employees from enforcing the new laws. I suspect that's not going to be as effective as they'd like it to be. The counties in question are within the jurisdiction of the state of Illinois and just as conservative states can pass laws that force cities and counties within their jurisdiction not to pass laws to protect transgender people, liberal states can pass laws that force cities and counties within their jurisdiction to abide by gun control laws. The only real challenge likely of having a chance to prevail would be to challenge the state's law as a violation of the 2nd amendment. |
