Except for 2 cars Ford will become an SUV and truck line. Ford would have to end its NASCAR sponsorship unless the Mustang would be utilized in 2020 for NASCAR competition. |

Yes because what we need are more gas guzzling SUV's and trucks on the roads.... |

Actually, I think that this is an indication that Ford feels it can meet CAFE requirements while using its larger lineup of vehicles that sell better. The article indicates that they plan on more hybrid and even some EV vehicles in their truck SUV and Crossover lines. |

RAM already does 29 with their little diesel in the 1500 and most trucks can get into the mid 20MPG with gas engines now. I think with the hybrid F-150 they are planning they will be close to 40 and Ford just took the title as most fuel efficient half ton with their new F-150 Diesel that is out this year. It gets 30mpg highway. http://www.autonews.com/article/20180419/OEM04/180419743/ford-claims-30-mpg-f-150-diesel-wins-pickup-mileage-crown Edited by Demagogue, Apr 26 2018, 11:27 AM.

I think this is an interesting capitulation. I doubt Honda or Toyota will quit selling cars. I wonder if Ford has realized they cannot be competitive. I also wonder how long that lasts or if this could be a strategic mistake that kills the company. |

Actually, this is Ford conceding an entire division to the Japanese. Alan Mulally wouldn’t have done this. |

No, they just decided that people should only have the option of a Honda. |

The V8 Mustang will be lucky to get even 15 mpg. I drive the V8 Camaro at 12.5 mpg at high octane pump prices. I don't see Ford getting mileage standards without including a handful of diesels in their lineup. |

The preference for SUVs is cyclical, it will just take one uptick in gas prices and the company will go insolvent. |

That is their plan. I foresee the base engine in the F-150 being a diesel or a hybrid if they keep raising the CAFE. The article with this topic said that they intend to use more hybrids and even pure EVs. The car segment of the market has not been profitable for Ford in a long time here in the USA. For all intents and purposes this is just cutting out the dead parts of there company. |

American car companies, especially GM has long been plagued by too many production models., remember the Oldsmobile? The demand has changed, most people are opting for the SUV, they handle like cars and are much more practical. The wife and I just bought a new small SUV, it gets 26 city, 30 highway and it's exponentially cleaner than models 10 years ago. The engine shuts off after a prolonged stop. Investors like the decision, they have to focus on what is profitable. |

I posted a link to this in the automotive section but I will post it here also since it is worth a read for those interested in the auto industry. This is a multi-part article about the future of the automotive industry in the words of the folks who run it. It is pretty interesting. It is set up as a kind of e-magazine so you have to click on the various parts to jump to them but the content is pretty good. http://www.autonews.com/section/industry_redesigned#top

Not so long ago, Ford was selling as many Fusions and Foci as Honda sold Accords and Civics. Very short-sighted. |

They have not done that without fleet sales in over 20 years. |

Bought my last Ford spring of 1979 a Mustang Cobra, it was unmitigated garbage it had electrical problems galore. Not to mention it had an Air-Research turbocharger bolted to an otherwise stock Pinto motor with no intercooler. I'm certain you automotive wizards know what that means - it means you can't drive the car above 5,000 ft. because the engine will die, that's what it means. So, Ford is no longer building the cars that no one wants. In my opinion, if you're dumb enough to buy a Ford you're dumb enough to suffer the consequences. |

Ford Fusion and Ford Focus have had comparable sales to Toyota and Honda. They have been well received and appreciated by their owners. I’ve been well-satisfied with mine and I have put many miles on it. These boneheads just told me I should have never given them a chance and should have bought the Honda instead. No, they just told you that they have not been able to sell enough for the vehicle to be profitable in this market. You know that whole market economy thing? How the market corrects itself? This is the market making a correction. I will give you a similar example. Every single car manufacturer used to make mini-vans. The market was saturated and the profit per vehicle was low. Now, the minivan market is held by the folks who sold the most prior to several manufacturers dropping out. There were too many of that type of vehicle on the market so the market adjusted. This is no different. |
