I posted a link to this in the automotive section but I will post it here also since it is worth a read for those interested in the auto industry.

This is a multi-part article about the future of the automotive industry in the words of the folks who run it. It is pretty interesting. It is set up as a kind of e-magazine so you have to click on the various parts to jump to them but the content is pretty good.

Redesigning the Industry
A new auto industry is forming, triggered by a reimagining of the vehicle itself. New business models are coalescing, centered on technology innovators, fleet operators, services businesses and platform providers.

How will it all shake out?
Interesting reads, thanks.

Interesting in the divergence of views from the most pessimistic to optimistic.

Quoting limited to 5 levels deep
RAM already does 29 with their little diesel in the 1500 and most trucks can get into the mid 20MPG with gas engines now.

I think with the hybrid F-150 they are planning they will be close to 40 and Ford just took the title as most fuel efficient half ton with their new F-150 Diesel that is out this year. It gets 30mpg highway.

http://www.autonews.com/article/20180419/OEM04/180419743/ford-claims-30-mpg-f-150-diesel-wins-pickup-mileage-crown
The V8 Mustang will be lucky to get even 15 mpg. I drive the V8 Camaro at 12.5 mpg at high octane pump prices. I don't see Ford getting mileage standards without including a handful of diesels in their lineup.
That is their plan. I foresee the base engine in the F-150 being a diesel or a hybrid if they keep raising the CAFE.

The article with this topic said that they intend to use more hybrids and even pure EVs. The car segment of the market has not been profitable for Ford in a long time here in the USA. For all intents and purposes this is just cutting out the dead parts of there company.
Not so long ago, Ford was selling as many Fusions and Foci as Honda sold Accords and Civics.

Very short-sighted.
Been a Ford fan all my life.

I too think that this is a huge mistake.

There isn't a sedan that looks enticing enough to buy in Ford's line-up. Compare Ford's line-up with Honda and Toyota, it's night and day. It's not hard to see why American consumers prefer Japanese brands.

All Fusions and Fiestas are built by angry Mexicans whose poor workmanship and reliability has hurt sales...Ford has shot itself in the foot by shifting production to Mexico and pending tariffs.............

Yeah, It looks like I will never buy another American car.

I expect there will be some gas shortage in the future and Ford will go belly up.

Are the directors of FoMoCo best at deciding how to maximize corporate earnings? This issue of international auto production is very, very complicated. Trump has already demonstrated that he doesn't know jack about it.

Ford Fusion and Ford Focus have had comparable sales to Toyota and Honda. They have been well received and appreciated by their owners. I’ve been well-satisfied with mine and I have put many miles on it. These boneheads just told me I should have never given them a chance and should have bought the Honda instead.
So right! My wife has had a Ford Focus for years. Fact is the Focus has been one great car.

Has been is the key word. I was a loyal car ford owner. I will never buy another product from them again.

Evidently, things in the sedan world are not all wonderful for the others either.

Honda is cutting production too.

The passenger car is a "mature technology" facing revolutionary changes (electric, self-driving). Manufacturing has been globalized for a couple of generations, creating a complex supply chain to match the rapidly changing demand (market). In these circumstances, government manipulation by taxes and tariffs doesn't do much good. The best approach is a regulated free market with retraining as needed for the workforce.
