Ford Motor announced Wednesday that it's cutting traditional sedans from its U.S. lineup, except for the venerable Mustang, saying goodbye to the Fusion, Focus, Fiesta and Taurus so it can double down on trucks and sport utilities. (The Focus nameplate will stick around but in the form of a future crossover utility.)

"Ford realized it can't be everything to everyone, and in today's market that could be okay," said Jessica Caldwell, executive director of industry analysis for Edmunds. "The key to success is focusing on where your customers are and where your strengths lie, and for Ford doubling down on trucks and SUVs could be just what the brand needs."

Skipping leg day is the equivalent of a woman having an abortion. You're ashamed of it, and it was probably unnecessary.

Don't forget the Koreans and the Germans....

Hyundai/Kia are putting out some really good cars as of late ....and Mercedes/BMW own their own spaces in the upper tier sedan market....WTF happened to VW....to me they are always an afterthought....

Cheating on emissions is what happened to VW. Bad juju. I heard fro a Mercees sales manager that MBZ may delete all diesels going forward because they fear the same thing happening to them

Their diesel cars still performed well in spite of the emissions

Ford is looking at the wrong place for answer to the company's woes. Why are Japanese auto makers able to build a car that is appealing to Americans whereas Ford cannot.

Would you want to drive a Taurus or Accord, Maxima, Mazda 3/6, or Camry? For every 100 or higher of those Japanese cars, I may spot a Taurus on the road.

I don’t get why they cut the Fusion and Focus- they sold just fine.

Fusion is fine but not too many on the road either. Fusion does not have the slick look as the Camry.

Yup. Mazda is upping their game. The new 6 is pretty slick. I heard the engine will automatically cut off 2 cylinders to save fuel on light road.

Who needs a crappy diesel, when Mazda will soon offer a compression ignition gas engine with all the advantages of a diesel with none of the disadvantages. Mazda is now the premier Japanese automaker, their interior designs are now being copied by Ford, Toyota, and others. Also, the new Mazda 6 Turbo has 300 lb. ft. of torque@ 2,000 RPM's and will blow the doors off the new Camry and Accord.

But it can't touch my Stinger

The American manufacturers are making this decision of a very good reason: they can't make money selling traditional passenger cars. It doesn't surprise me. Up here where I live, everybody drives some sort of SUV or 4wd pickup. Our schools would close a dozen or more days each winter if we had to depend on parents getting the kids into school by driving a 2wd. The market isn't there. If it isn't there, foreigners aren't going to make any money trying to sell in it either.

No Gatorman. Honda, Mazda, Toyota, and Nissan make car people want to buy. The market is there.

Most small , cheap American cars are already built by angry Mexicans, with lousy assembly and reliability....It is difficult to sell a bean burner when rice burners with good assembly and reliability are made in US factories.............. :oyvey

When the OP says "so it can double down on trucks and sport utilities" it means that the market is more profitable for those models, doesn't it? Please explain.

Oh right, because Honda hasn't been making a profit on Civics for the last forty years. :rotflmao:

The market is there for sedans. Ford is not able to turn a profit with their line-up. Ford truck, SUV, and Mustang are keeping the company afloat.

The Focus and Fusion sold very well in the segment when their models were first introduced. They failed to invest in a new model and so sales have suffered.

I don't get that either. Both were reliable and fuel economy cars. Had Ford keep up with the Civic or Camry, the company may own a sizeable market share.
