Police in Puerto Rico deployed tear gas and fired rubber bullets to shut down May Day protests as thousands of people took to the streets of the U.S. territory, which is still battling the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria—and a debt crisis that preceded the storm. While people worldwide demonstrated Tuesday to demand improved labor conditions on International Workers Day, Puerto Ricans also turned out to protest the Trump administration's failed response to the humanitarian crisis that followed the hurricane as well as austerity measures imposed by the federal government both before and after the storm struck last September. https://www.commondreams.org/news/2018/05/02/police-unleash-brutal-attacks-austerity-protesters-storm-ravaged-puerto-rico |

John Nichols @NicholsUprising Our miserably failed cable and broadcast media could not be bothered to provide coverage of the massive demonstrations on May Day in #PuertoRico — where US citizens who are being ravaged by federal-government imposed austerity rose up in protest. If Puerto Ricans want their "fair share" of benefits, they will abandon dual citizenship, become a State of America, be subject to the military draft, allow military bases, learn to speak English, and pay federal income taxes........... :oyvey |

Puerto Rico is an island that's almost as big as Jamaica mon. Rebuild the place and bring tourism back, agriculture and manufacturing jobs--install a state of the art solar and wind energy grid. Call it the Greek project- the Mediterranianization of the Caribbean.

Let be serious here. If PR wants to modernize itself, that would have taken place long ago. Majority of people there have no intention of doing honest work unless fraud is included. They want a free handout from the US mainland but don't want to pay their share? Get real. |
