Railroad companies desperate for workers offer hiring bonuses up to $25,000

BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Corp. are desperate for talented workers and offering bonuses of up to $25,000 to fill jobs in some cases.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the railways are hauling more products across the Western U.S. and are trying to ease congestion in high demand areas. A shortage of space in semi trucks is sending more shipments onto freight trains.

More jobs and higher wages...thank you President Trump!

Thank you laws of supply and demand!

No thanks to lying liberals who claim high taxes and unlimited immigration help ordinary Americans.

These ^^^ disruptions are characteristic of the "free market" economy. The free market does its job well but at the cost of unpredictable gyrations in the labor market and unnecessary crises in workers' lives.

WTF are you talking about? Unnecessary crises in workers' lives...are you saying if they lose their job? Do you think people should be guaranteed work? Are you a communist?

Companies are always looking for experienced workers, but not willing to train young Americans.

Companies are always looking for experienced workers, but not willing to train young Americans.
When a small town factory of 30,000 shuts down, at least half the workforce is over 40 and retraining for another skill or occupation is often much more difficult , and many times requires either relocation or settling for longer hours and less pay at whatever local jobs are available.

And when it's been happening all across the country for 30 years, the ripple effects will eventually reach everyone.

Many of these railroad job openings are for inspectors and electricians, which both usually require about 5 years of experience, so even skilled workers have to go in entry-level.

Democrats have a solution, tax the life out of the economy and employers will have a surplus of employees to choose from. The alternative is these jobs go to illegals!

Take your pick...

That's ^^^ a good point. However, I can't entirely blame corporations for not training new, young workers. This is a free market economy and that includes the labor market. A company can spend thousands of dollars training a worker only to have him/her go to a competitor for an extra two bucks and hour. Restricting that freedom of movement as a condition of training is not only wildly unpopular, it hasn't stood up well in the courts and is impractical to enforce in any event. Countries where the lifetime employment contract goes both ways -- Japan for example -- don't have this problem, but we do.

BTW this is an area of labor economics where partnership between labor (unionized) and management such as in Germany works really well for both sides.

Railroad inspectors make around $60 K - actually more than airline inspectors. Electricians and conducters - about the same.

This list doesn't include crane operators who do pretty well...$75 to $150 K or more depending on the location.

Pathetic (Crane operators aside) It's no wonder they are short workers. How can you live on that?

Definitely. Germany deals with this very successfully.

I'm sure the more experience- the more you make.
These are generally starting salaries.

Also depends on the cost of living in the area, benefits...etc

Most workers can handle a $25,000 sign on bonus with little disruption to their lives.............
