why are we wrong to demand reciprical tariff agreements?

Combining VAT into tariffs makes this picture useless unless you want to make a nonsensical political statement.

So what about this 270% on US dairy products?....
What about it? We have a 350% tariff on imported tobacco and a 163% tariff on unshelled peanuts.

http://www.businessinsider.com/americas-biggest-tariffs-2010-9#shelled-peanuts-1318-tariff-22
Since when do we import tobacco and peanuts from Canada?
Where we import them from isn't important. What is important is why we have them. Canada has a 270% tariff on dairy goods because we're right next door, we're ten times their size, and we could easily flood their dairy market with cheap dairy products, destroying their dairy farms. Well, Canadian dairy producers provide about 220k in jobs in Canada, we destroy their dairy market and those people suddenly go unemployed.

We also have a 350% tariff on tobacco because our tobacco producers don't want the competition of cheap tobacco coming in from China or India, the two largest tobacco producers in the world.

Every country has industries that it protects for various reasons. If we opened up completely free trade without any tariffs, the economies of entire countries would be utterly destroyed because they simply can't produce ANYTHING as cheaply as it can be mass produced somewhere else.

Tariffs are only bad when they're abused. An argument can be made that some of our trading partners are abusing their tariffs. That's a fair point and one we should be addressing. But expecting our trading partners to completely open their entire economy is asinine, it's never going to happen and for good reasons.

Aren't we the ones complaining about all the jobs we've lost to China and other third world countries? Well that's because we lowered the tariffs on imports from those countries. Are we seriously expecting our trading partners to do exactly what we're bitching about as being a problem with others?

I'll tell you right now, Canada, Mexico and the EU will close down trade with the U.S. before they'd willingly abandon all tariffs and let the chips fall where they may for their economies.
The interesting thing is that Trump is attacking Canada for doing the same thing he is doing with steel/aluminum.

There is currently a glut of dairy. The Canadians are supporting their dairy farmers by limiting supply and propping up prices. They are limiting domestic production and limiting imports.

This is exactly what Trump is trying to do with steel. He put tariffs on Canadian/EU/Asia steel and aluminium products to support higher prices and support the domestic industry.

So can President Trump explain why his actions are good and the Canadian's bad?

There is simply no trade agreement that our trade partners will accept where we get all the advantages and they simply get screwed.

I don't know what you and Trump expect to accomplish, but entirely open trade by our partners while we play protectionist games is not an end result that is even remotely plausible.

So what about this 270% on US dairy products?....
Canada protects their dairy farmers by limiting production internally and limiting imports. This keep dairy prices high in Canada. What is interesting is that the US also limits dairy imports into the US to 3% while Canada imports 10% of its dairy products from the US.

I wonder if Trump is willing to give up all the price supports, tariffs and other policies that protect American agriculture like sugar?
Since when do we import sugar from Canada?....Didn't know it was such a large sugar producer....
We limit imports of sugar and protect our domestic industry.

The point is that the U.S. protects more than a few industries through price supports, tariffs and regulations. For us to criticize another country for doing the same is hypocritical at best.
Prior Presidents have obviously done a poor job at protecting its manufacturing through price supports , tariffs, and regulations..............

Are we getting screwed on prior trade agreements....yes
Has it decimated our manufacturing base and the middle class....yes
Will Trump get everything he is currently asking for? ....probably not...
Will Trump get our "allies" to capitulate to much better trade agreements that will benefit America and it's workers??? Absolutely without a doubt
Will the soy boys and lispy people scream and shout while Trump is doing for America what we elected him to do...??? Also absolutely without a doubt.

Trump has been talking about this for over 3 decades....he knows exactly what he is doing and with his team of Ross, Mnuchin, Pompeo, and now the koala Kudlow they are executing it almost flawlessly...

When you opine that something Trump is doing is stupid ....you said the same thing multiple times during the campaign. Probably multiple times as he made decisions on the economy, jobs, national security, energy etc...etc..etc...

Each step of the way you doubted because

A) That's what your media masters who lied to you daily for two plus years tell you on a daily basis
B) You can't wrap your head around how da fuk this bombastic Ahole won the most amazing political victory in history
C) And continues whether you agree or not to absolutely crush the entire political world as we've known it as a political novice
D) You hate his persona

I get it....I cannot for the life of me come to grips that Kim Kardashian has a higher net worth than me....for being filmed having sex with a black C list celebrity and then going shopping for 10 years....

But you know what....and some point you got to see reality....

My media told me X for 2 years and they were completely wrong
My former President told me there was no magic wand and he was wrong
My other peeps told me there is no way we will end the Korean conflict....well except for Dennis Rodman

Sorry to burst your bubble but all those elites and experts that spoon fed you your world view have been 100% wrong....

And yet you doubt....

Take off the rose colored glasses and trade them in for some orange ones cuz it's gonna be a fun next few years til 2020....

You'll have to wait till 2025 - and it's doubtful that even then the DNC will have its s**t together (if they exist at all)
