The Story of SS Stanbrook

As a cargo ship, just 230 feet long, the Stanbrook only had accommodation for its 24 man crew. However, there were soon many hundreds, if not thousands, of people queuing to get on board.

According to historian Juan Martínez Leal, after customs officials had processed 900 of them in a relatively orderly fashion, there was a sudden panic, as rumours emerged of imminent attack by the Italian or German air forces who were supporting Franco.
Dickson considered withdrawing the gangplank but that might have meant tipping many of the refugees into the water. Instead he allowed 2,638 people on board.

Ten minutes into the journey, fascist aircraft appeared overhead. The sound of explosions came from the port in Alicante and two bombs fell into the water behind the Stanbrook, causing chaos on board as passengers rushed to one side of the boat, causing it to list alarmingly.

After 22 hours they arrived near Oran in Algeria but the journey still wasn't over. The French colonial authorities refused them permission to disembark. After Dickson went onshore to negotiate, they allowed the women, children, elderly and injured to leave but the men would remain there for almost another month. Even after that their suffering wasn't over. Many of them were interned in concentration camps.

Bulls**t reporting - Foreigners can't vote in regional and general elections; I should know, I can't and I have lived here for 37 years. As a European resident you can vote in the municipal elections only. People from outside the EU cannot vote even in the municipals, unless Spaniards are allowed to vote in their countries.

The way Mozzie's article was presented, it deliberately implied that they could vote in all Spanish elections whereas they can't vote in any at the moment.

But, hey! It's Mozzie!

Furthermore, the Aquarius only had 600-odd immigrants onboard, a third of whom have already left the country. We don't get Libyan illegals because it is four days sailing away. Our ones cross the straits which they can do in one night from Magreb. The majority of whom are processed and returned directly to Morocco, with whom Spain has an accord.

The problem at the moment is that the temporary holding centres are overwhelmed by the spring/summer arrivals when crossing the Med in an open boat is safer, which is why the Spanish PM was in Germany asking for more cooperation for maintaining and building more T.H.C.s here in Spain.

Foreigners get naturalized, they have children who can vote. It’s best to never walk down that path.

It takes two years and a lot of paperwork - believe me, I have thought about it. A Brit cannot give up his citizenship because he is a British Subject, not a British citizen. Explained better. I can renounce my British nationality in order to obtain the Spanish one, but anytime afterwards I can reclaim my British nationality. What Spain might change is to accept - like most countries - dual nationality.

I might have to do it anyway with this Brexit idiocy as I have no intention nor inclination to return to the UK.

First, it is the "intentions" of the Spanish government which I chose to highlight, not its actual implementation. Of course those newly-imprinted 'Spaniards' who got off the boat can't vote in any election (as you deftly put it), ...at the moment. Hughmac has a continuous habit of building/stuffing well-made straw men for all occasions,..... :) , this being yet another one.

But, ...but, ...like a freight train rumbling down the track, it's a comin babe, it's a comin.

Many of these newly arrived migrants can't vote in France either, but they represent an ever increasing portion of the populace. In Paris ya got tent cities galore. Migrants on every street corner, a massive demographic force to be reckoned with. How ya gonna stop em? The numbers are staggering. "You people can't vote yet, until,....until, ...well, we'll let ya know, ...Okey-dokey?"

The liberals/socialists/commies in this country played the same game with us. In the early 1980's they convinced Ronald Reagan to provide "amnesty" for the millions of Mexicans who had quietly swept across the border. Reagan made a deal with the Democrats, but never bothered looking at the "fine print." EVERY newly amnestied migrant received the right to bring in 10 to 20 'relatives' as part of their permission to stay. No one was watching, no one was paying attention. It was a 'con game" constructed by Democrats to increase their voting power in states like, oh, say, ...California. (and Nevada) And, Holy Moses, did they ever win on that one! Massive numbers of new Democratic voters, promised all kinds of freebee's by the liberals, swarmed into two states. California, once a stronghold for Republican politics, is now doomed with millions and millions of migrants, mixed-in with the loopy 'far' left-wing liberals of San Francisco and Hollywood.

It's coming to Spain too. And France, and Germany and the UK. An unwavering voting block that will sweep to power for generations to come. Um, don't believe me? Er, who is that God-awful mayor of London, who's had a deplorable track record running the city, yet will win every and any election there for the foreseeable future? Huh? That, my friend, is the future of Europe.....

I found the story of the the SS Stanbrook to be fascinating. Good stuff. Archbold Dickson should be honored for his heroism and his common sense. One could also include the many stories of ships loaded with Jewish refugee's who were refused entry into ports during and after World War II. Finally, one could also include the story of the Willhalm Gustloff, perhaps the greatest maritime disaster in human history:

Posted Image

..."30 January 1945 – nine hours after leaving port and seventy minutes after being hit, the huge liner, the Wilhelm Gustloff, slipped under the waves and sunk.
The Wilhelm GustloffA small fleet of ships and boats arrived on the scene and managed to pluck a few survivors from the icy waters and rescued many of those on the lifeboats. Over a thousand were rescued but… an estimated 9,343 people died, half of them children – six times the 1,517 that died on the Titanic in 1912."
http://www.historyinanhour.com/2011/01/30/wilhelm-gustloff-biggest-maritime-disaster/

And, oh by the way, the Russian captain who launched that torpedo was "honored" after the war by the Stalin and the Soviet Union.

Comments on the Stanbrook shortly, however,....

Classic! Absolutely predictable.

The socialist, ...far, far, left-wing Spanish government wishes to give all of the new refugee's, ....wait for it, ....the right to vote!

Sound familiar?

Mozart
Why don't they go back to their own country and vote? :dunno:

The problem at the moment is that the temporary holding centres are overwhelmed by the spring/summer arrivals when crossing the Med in an open boat is safer, which is why the Spanish PM was in Germany asking for more cooperation for maintaining and building more T.H.C.s here in Spain.

..."The way Mozzie's article was presented, it deliberately implied that they could vote in all Spanish elections whereas they can't vote in any at the moment." ...

That's rich! Hughmac uses strawmen :rotflmao:

What the Government intends or not, does not include immigrants, residents or not, voting in the General or even regional elections; equivalent to your national and state elections. Your rubbish article, which made not the slightest mention of this, is implying a pending blanket access to the vote in "Spanish elections."

Oh, and I love it that although it was the Republicans under Ronnie that did the amnesty that you mentioned, it's somehow the fault of the Democrats :rotflmao:

Look, the majority of Americans are freaking immigrants in origin and have the vote; you've got Poles, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Russians, Indians (from India) - you name it. But of course, you're only worried about Muslims, it seems.

Oh by the way, you were going to comment on SS Stanbrook....

Straw man? Oh, you betcha.

On the topic of migrants overwhelming the coast of Italy, and subsequently being accepted by a "far' left-wing socialist government in Spain (rather than demanding that the boat seek sanctuary in Tunisia), you decided to build a nice straw man and attack the idea of voting rights for new immigrants, which we both knew is NOT immediate, but could easily be argued to be the end game of most libs/socialists/ commies when it comes to the massive influx of migrants to the EU. I even mentioned the overwhelming numbers of refugee's living in tent cities in Paris as a perfect example as to what is to come. These people will eventually be allowed to vote, right? There is no getting around it. They will overwhelming vote 'far' left-wing, ....in massive numbers! It is a George Soros creation. It's what the Dems/libs/commies did to us here when no one was looking. The entire future of the Democratic Party is now tied to illegal migrants from Central and South America and Mexicans. Pause here to give that some thought. Illegal immigrants, ---> the new hope for the Democratic Party. It's complete insanity. Open borders. Get rid of ICE. Bizarre stuff one could never believe being pushed for by a major political party. Breathtaking stuff. It's coming to Europe too, ....and soon.

So, rather than talk about (1) the enormous economic costs to Spain and other EU countries over wave after wave of new migrants, (2) the idea of the Spanish government spending millions upon millions of Euro's on people who are NOT Spanish citizens, while at the same time ignoring their own poor and jobless, (3) the influx of criminality and social upheaval as a result of bringing Muslim migrants to a country that allows bikini's on its beaches and women's form-fitting clothing on its streets, YOU chose to highlight that NO migrant can now vote in Spanish elections, a point never made in any argument. (see above) A, ....classic, ....straw man!

One of Hughmac's creations a few years back, ...... :)
