Germany willing to cut tariffs on US cars, lifting automakers’ shares Germany’s chancellor said Thursday she’s willing to back lower tariffs on U.S. auto imports as a potential European Union (EU) concession to the Trump administration – just one day after CEOs of Germany’s biggest carmakers reportedly voiced support for eliminating such tariffs entirely. link Gee never saw that coming...

On Wednesday, the chief executives of prominent German auto companies – including Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen – “liked” a Trump administration proposal for both sides to reduce those tariffs to zero, according to German business news outlet Handelsblatt. The proposal was said to have been made by U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell during a meeting at the U.S. embassy. The EU tariff rate on all U.S. car imports is 10% while the U.S. tariff on imported European cars is 2.5%. Auto stocks, including Ford, Fiat and General Motors, rose on the news Thursday. #NotTiredOfWinning

The EU was always more likely to find an accommodation of some kind. China is going to be the tougher nut to crack. They don't have alliance with us they'd like to preserve, and they see potential advantage to them by being able to portray the U.S. as the evil trade war initiator, while they were the reasonable, looking to negotiate, party. |

Who needs an alliance when you have a 500 billion dollar trade surplus you want to preserve? It's going to take the world a little time to get it, we are no longer going to accept unfair trade policies. After a trillion dollar plus theft of intellectual property rights it's time to take a stand. They openly bootleg every product we produce, go to China and see it for yourself. |

Any way you slice it, China isn't going to be able to preserve the trade imbalance if it caves to Trump. Its economy cannot reasonably absorb the purchase of $500 billion more in American goods. So if it agrees to a deal it's going to have to significantly decrease its exports to the U.S. while increasing its imports as well. And it loses significant face in front of the global community if it caves, and possibly loses regional influence with the other Pacific rim countries. Is that a more attractive result than simply accepting the U.S. market is closed to them for the time being, which is unlikely to be forever, taking a serious short term economic hit, with the hopes of getting a better deal down the road once Trump is out of the picture? While continuing to milk the situation in other ways to their advantage? Personally, I don't think Xi Jinping is going to be willing to accept caving to the Trump administration, because being perceived as having knuckled under to the obnoxious, bullying Americans would cause him to lose serious face at home. And the one thing he will cannot allow is his leadership to be questioned at home. There is no end game here where the Trump administration wins, simply because the only win they'll accept is the complete humiliation of China, and China won't play that game. |

So you now agree and support President Trump's efforts to get fair and balanced trade with the EU and the rest of the world thereby growing American manufacturing and assisted the American working men and women to Make America Great Again.... Took you long enough. |

This is a joke, right? Like Hopey Changey dude was ever going to tighten up these trade imbalances. He would have just bent over and taken it til he had an arsehole the size of a clown's pocket. I am happy to malign Trump over things he ought to be maligned for but this is way overdue and for whatever reason, mainly our pols are p*ssies, the situation was only getting worse. If you think China is going to take a $400 billion 'short term' hit, you are really underestimating where the Chinese live. They are slowly learning, like the Europeans, that Trump isn't going to fold. They will find some sort of accomodation, and save face doing it. |

And if you study Trump....he always says he has great respect for Xi and this is just a bump they get through together....he blames (rightly so) the crappy deals on the Americans who signed them....he always leaves room for the Chinese to save face.... Trump and Ross and Lighthizer have all either built in China, licensed in China, invested in China etc....they know it well....Trump has been talking about this for over 4 decades... Look at their resumes...start with this one.... Robert E. Lighthizer was sworn in as the 18th United States Trade Representative (USTR) on May 15, 2017. An experienced trade negotiator and litigator, Ambassador Lighthizer brings a history of tough U.S. trade enforcement and a record of standing up for American workers, farmers, manufacturers, and businesses. At the time he was chosen by President Trump to serve as USTR, Ambassador Lighthizer was a partner at the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP (Skadden), where he practiced international trade law for over 30 years. His work there on behalf of American workers and businesses in the heavy manufacturing, agricultural, high-tech, and financial services industries opened markets to U.S. exports and defended U.S. industries from unfair trade practices. He was lead counsel for scores of trade enforcement cases and was a well-known advocate for the type of “America First” trade policies supported by President Trump. Before joining Skadden, Ambassador Lighthizer served as Deputy USTR for President Ronald Reagan. During his tenure, Ambassador Lighthizer negotiated over two dozen bilateral international agreements, including agreements on steel, automobiles, and agricultural products. As Deputy USTR, he also served as Vice Chairman of the Board of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation. Prior to becoming Deputy USTR, Ambassador Lighthizer was Chief of Staff of the United States Senate Committee on Finance for Chairman Bob Dole. In this position, he was a key player in enacting the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981, which was the most significant tax reform in decades, as well as the other basic elements of the Reagan economic program. Ambassador Lighthizer earned a Bachelor’s degree at Georgetown University and his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center. He is a native of Ashtabula, Ohio and has two children. link Edited by clone, Jul 6 2018, 07:20 PM.

China is already cracking. Trump is looking at $500 billion tariffs against them. Trump will be known as the president who crashed China's economy if they keep up with him. Edited by Drudge X, Jul 6 2018, 07:49 PM.

I think his efforts are doomed to eventual failure because he's trying to use a machine gun in a situation that calls for a sniper rifle. The EU and China are not just going to bow down and kiss his feet, regardless of what you and Trump think. If the deal isn't balanced to their satisfaction, there will be no deal. And we all know that Trump doesn't understand any deal where he can't claim complete victory. |
