Islam is an irresponsible pit bull owner.

Islam is an irresponsible pit bull owner.

The owners of pit bulls always tell us how they are wonderful pets and how they can be good dogs. While this can certainly be true, statistics have shown us that pit bulls are one of the more dangerous breeds to own. In many places society has responded to it's citizens desire to own large dangerous dog breeds in several ways. Many apartment complexes won't allow these dogs. Many communities require special registration for these breeds while not bothering with any registration for less dangerous breeds. These are all well meaning attempts to mitigate the problem but sadly, every year there are many cases of pit bulls getting loose and killing some innocent bystander who was just trying to go about their day.

Some communities have gone so far as to pass laws that hold the dog owner responsible for the dog's actions. Basically, these communities became fed up and decided that, while maybe they could not force people to give up on their belief that these were good pets, they could at least punish them harshly if their insistence on owning a dangerous dog ended up getting someone hurt or killed. In the most extreme cases these laws treat the dog as if it were something akin to a firearm. In other words, if your dog got loose and went off by itself and killed someone you get charged with manslaughter. If you were found to have encouraged the dog to attack someone and it killed them you can get charged with first degree murder.

Islam as a whole tends to treat its more radical variants in the same manner that pit bull owners treat their dogs. They think of them as misunderstood. They think that if they are just raised in the right environment they can be good citizens. They think that they should be allowed to exist in close proximity to the rest of polite society. Well, we may not be able to force all of the Islamic people around the world to change their opinion about the true nature of radical Islamist's but we dang sure can hold them responsible for the actions of their pet and I'm afraid that it is long past time that we do so.

To the peace loving Islamic people of the world I say this; the ball is in your court. You have the power to discourage these people. You have the power to see them in your communities and report them to authorities when they act suspiciously. You have the power to denounce their leaders and kick them out of your holy places. Until you do these things and more, you are no better than the owner of a rabid, vicious dog who keeps letting it off it's chain and you should be held responsible for your actions.
