In July this year Chrome will stop supporting XP and Avista. Anyone know of a substitute, or replacement? What would you suggest? |

Yes, the solution is to ditch XP. Vista is still somewhat OK. With that said. Try Opera. https://www.opera.com/download/requirements/ |

Thanks for the information. I used your link and read the page. Unfortunately I don't have a clue of what all that means. Should I take my computer to a computer store and have them save all my files, install Opera and then reload my saved files? I was told to upload windows 10, but I've known some people that have done that and then lost some of their files. I don't want to do that. And, I don't see how windows 10 has anything to do with XP? (An operating system?) I just don't have a clue of what I'm doing. I don't want to buy a new computer every 5-7 years. It's ridiculous. My computer works just fine. And, I don't even know if I have XP or Vista. Just keep getting this idiot box in yellow every time I go to my Google home page. (Which is somehow connected to Chrome...which I hate!) Thanks for your help! |

Giz, Opera is a browser, like Chrome, but it will work with XP and/or Vista. You can download it from https://www.opera.com/download , but check D's link and make sure you have the minimum stuff: Windows Windows XP or later Pentium 4 processor or later that supports SSE2 512 MB of RAM 300 MB of free disk space You may need the computer peeps to verify those things if you don't know where to find the info on your computer, and to do the download, install and importing of your bookmarks. |

What I was saying is that XP is obsolete from a security point of view. If you have a machine that runs XP then you really need to consider an upgrade to a new Operating System or new computer. With that said. I provided Opera as an option that still supports XP and gave a lint to the page that listed its requirements. Bottom line, download Opera and try it from the link Wilmy provided but you need to consider an actual computer upgrade eventually because microsoft no longer supports Windows XP (any version) or Vista prior to service pack 1. Soon all support for vista will be gone also. Aslo, if you are still using Windows XP, DO NOT PERFORM ANY INTERNET BANKING. Ever. With that machine. Edited by Demagogue, Mar 25 2016, 09:38 PM.

Thanks Wilmy, I'll try that. I'll have the shop save everything, download Opera and then reinstall my programs and files if necessary. (Just in case). That way they can reload my favorites and bookmarks too. Thanks for your help! |

Well, I'm so computer illiterate that I don't know much. I turn it on, it works, or not. For my "security" I use a free version of AVG. But, I made the mistake of loading some sort of "tools" to clean my files. It cleaned out hundreds of file errors. (One time - free). Ever since then it's slow, sticks on pages, and is a pain in the but. Also some of the problems are that pages you load on the internet now are so full of additional sales ads and videos that it take a bloody hour to load up. And, 1 out of three tries I just have to close the browser and reload my browser again, and go back to that page again. It's a real pain when you are trying to post on here, have 2-3 sites open and one or more stick or freeze up on you. Like I've said for years...I hate Chrome with a passion! Do I really have to buy a new computer with a new operating system? Can't I just buy an operating system and put it in this computer? I have a desk top and a lap top. |

Depends on the specs of that PC. Generally, windows 7 needs 4 gigabytes of ram minimum to run good and your processor needs to be dual core and at least 2Ghz or faster. Earlier generation processors need to be even faster. |

Computers improve exponentially very, very fast. I had a 2006 Toshiba that ran XP. Loved it. It was stolen, I now have a 2011 Toshiba that runs 7, lightning fast by comparison, but nowhere near as good as a new one running 10. |

Thanks Wilmy, Thinking that I may just buy a new one and use my other two as storage cans. I'll have to price a new computer v. new software and instillation. Glad you like your Toshiba, I'll look into that. Thanks for all your help. Giz |

Toshibas are very solid machines. Make sure you get something like malwarebytes either free or premium. Best malware protection out there. Nothing gets past my premium malwarebytes. |

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I have free AVG and got a window that said I needed to use this one time free tool to defrag my system from errors. I used it and now I have computer glitched on line by the dozen. My browser loads pages I didn't call for, it sticks and freezes pages. And, it seems like everyday I'm asked to reboot my computer. God only knows what it does on it's own when I reboot. I'll have to get off AVG too. And, I've used it for many many many years. Probably since at least 2006. Seems like all the "free" stuff is there to eventually lock you into to yearly charges, to fix their "free-ware". You've been so helpful, thank you so much! |

malwarebytes, it's the best, and the free is very good, premium is great. |
