"MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday announced the creation of powerful new National Guard security force, a move analysts said could be aimed at warding off unrest over the country’s economic crisis.

Putin said in a televised meeting with Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev and other security officials that the force would merge the country’s interior ministry troops with riot police and SWAT-style teams."

The reformation of the KGB. So nice of Vlad to begin revealing his true colours to his people.
Wolf Braun had died a fiery death and the Archangel emerged.

Not really, I mean there has been quite a sufficient force to counter popular unrest. Nothing happens in this regard in terms of creation of new divisions of Interior ministry. What really happens is creation of another pole of power, to counter FSB (former KGB) , the Army and Ministry of Interior. Just tossing forces which already exist.
The National guard will be headed by an extrenely and personally loyal man, a former personal guard of Putin.

So I'd say he's afraid of a coup. Not popular unrest.

Well, that can't happen soon enough. I'd love to see him hanging above Red Square. :nana:

Having been in person to visit the Kremlin walls from the outside, I actually hope that some day some internal Russian force will destroy the walls. Probably not going to happen in my lifetime, thou. The Russian people are too weak to overthrow anything since 1917... :)

Katzap may have his wishes on the future of them walls as he's a little boy being too scared of that outcome, which Finland will be part of trying to handle the civil war casualties... :)

Do you think the western rules of any country today need a personal protection of this kind?
There are rumours of this "protective force" to be including 400,000 men. Protecting what and whom?

So, you don't know what are the differences between very frequent demonstrations in majorly democratic countries, based on human and civil rights vs "demonstrations" in kleptocracies (where the government is afraid of the people), and how the governmental organizations are allowed to control them?

Can you explain why OMON forces are obviously not enough to "protect the government" in a (failing?) country such as Russia is?
Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OMON

(I saw quite a number of OMON groups patrolling in Moscow back in 2006...)

Jr, you are a zombie, living in your pervertive reality.
I live in Moscow, walk and drive here every day. I doubt I have ever seen an OMON member live, only on TV.
It does not mean there are no armed police patrols in some vulnerable places due to quite a record of terrorist acts by your friends Muslim/Chechen terrorists.
Though I have noot seen any for years, except such places as the Red Square maybe. Though there are traffic police officers, some of them have automatic guns.

I always say that a cop with a submachine gun is more effective in controlling large groups of dissidents.............

Wow.. what a dead place. Where are the trees on the sidewalk? Is there a sidewalk?

this is that place on the map. It is Garden ring :) It's almost the city center, a very busy place and big traffic route.
Hundreds of years ago there were city walls here, then by 1830 the ring street was organized .
Now authorities decided to reorganize it, space for traffic will be reduced and gardens to emerge again.
April was extremely warm, usually we have trees covered with leaves by Victory day May, 9. But this year it will be a week earlier. This is how old Moscow streets look like now. This is 500 meyers before the first picture.

or, another place on my route to work, along Yauza river

Hmm... So you want to believe I didn't see any men with OMON logo in their jacket (on the backside at least, probably also in the front with smaller letters)? I don't know what was their purpose in some places.

I didn't seem to have caught any of them in the photos I took but I wasn't carrying a camera with me all the time.

I have some pictures of military trucks and lots of untagged some kind of guards (nothing special there as you have the "little green untagged men" in Ukraine as well  ).

See one pic here:
