The world might be about to find out whether a train full of Nazi gold is really hidden in Poland

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/the-world-might-be-about-to-find-out-whether-a-train-full-of-nazi-gold-is-really-hidden-in-poland/ar-BBvDqp1?li=BBmkt5R&ocid=spartandhp

When two men claimed to have found a mysterious train filled with Nazi gold last fall in Poland, it all seemed too spectacular to be really true. Skepticism of the alleged finding quickly overtook the initial enthusiasm.

On Tuesday, we may finally find out whether the Nazi gold train has indeed been found.

One year after they claimed to have traced it, a team of 35 researchers that includes Piotr Koper and Andreas Richter will start digging for the precious metal. A report they worked on found that soil anomalies could hint at the train's existence, but another study by the AGH University of Science and Technology in the Polish city of Krakow found no evidence for that. The latter study, however, did conclude that a tunnel may be at the location where Koper and Richter will now put their theory to the test.

"The train is not a needle in the haystack — if there is one, we will find it,"Andrzej Gaik, the spokesman of the search committee, told news agency Agence France-Presse. The committee consists of volunteers rather than of Polish officials who refrained from participating in the search efforts.

Gaik remains hopeful: "If we find a tunnel, then that is also a success. Maybe the train is hidden inside that tunnel." The privately funded effort will be streamed live online and could be over within two days. Using special equipment, the search team is planning to drill three 100-meter holes into the ground.

I recently read a Clive Cussler novel that had the treasure train as part of the storyline.
People sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would do them harm.

The effort being streamed live online gave me a flash back of Geraldo Rivera and Al Capone's vault.

If any Gold is found at all, Germany nor the rest of Europe will get any of it. Hell, if there was any gold there, it's been taken already, melted down to kilo bars and shipped to China via Switzerland.

Well, were I betting man I would say that they will find 'something' in that tunnel related to the Nazi's. However, I think the "Amber Room" is in fact still in Poland and located in the former command post of Hitler during the invasion of Russia. That's in the northeast of Poland. The location in which they start digging TOMORROW is in southwest Poland.

This should be interesting...

Any lost artworks will be by international law, be returned to the families or estates of their previous owners or the Governments they were stolen from.

If there is Gold that may have to be divided up in reparations to repay the families of the 6,000,000. Certainly much of the gold came from Jewish prisoners... if they find some they will be entitled to a percentage. The rest may have to be turned over to the international court in the Hague for disposition.

it will be a complicated mess.

There are two places in Poland where the Amber Room could be located, (1) the current dig site in what was formerly Silesia (Germany), as per the article referenced above, or (2) the former "Wolfschanze" where Hitler's command post was for the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.

I believe they will find the Amber Room where the former "Wolfschanze" was located. It would have made perfect sense to move it from Koenigsberg (East Prussia) to here as the Soviet troops were advancing. They hid the room behind massive concrete walls which the Soviet Union had no electronic means to detect. I believe they will find it here.

This is the location identified as being the possible hiding place for the Amber Room:

There is perhaps no lost-treasure mystery more seductive than that of the priceless Amber Room of Peter the Great, which disappeared in the chaotic closing hours of World War II. Now Bartlomiej Plebanczyk, an unassuming historian and museum director in northeastern Poland, believes he has found it.

Elderly villagers told Mr. Plebanczyk that they had seen a German convoy unloading big crates into a secret chamber in a stark, moss-covered Nazi bunker near the Russian border in early 1945. So the Mamerki Museum, whichhe leads, recently completed a ground-penetrating radar scan of the derelict bunker that he said confirmed the existence of a hidden chamber.

“This is the perfect place to hide something if you have to move it quickly out of eastern Prussia,” Mr. Plebanczyk said.

Poles are used to hearing extravagant tales of lost war loot, and also to hearing the tales debunked. Last year, two men claimed to have found a buried train containing Nazi gold, but an investigation found no such thing. Despite that, war-treasure hunting is such a popular pastime in Poland that enthusiasts have their own web forum.

The Amber Room is a singular treasure. It was originally completed in the 18th century in a palace near St. Petersburg, Russia, paneled with six tons of precious amber, elaborately carved and decorated with gold. After advancing German troops captured the palace in 1941, the 600-square-foot room was dismantled and carted off to Königsberg Castle in East Prussia, where it was later exposed to British bombs and Soviet shells. Berlin sent orders in January 1945 to evacuate high-value cultural items from the castle, but what happened after has never been clear.

The Soviets declared that the Amber Room was destroyed in April 1945, as Königsberg was falling to the Red Army, and in the 1970s they built a replica. Others said the precious amber panels had been aboard the Wilhelm Gustloff, a German military ship, when a Soviet torpedo sank it in the Baltic. Further theories abound.

Mamerki, 60 miles south of Königsberg (now called Kaliningrad), is not an unlikely place to look. The bunker was part of a heavily fortified headquarters for German ground forces on the Eastern Front.

So the Polish authorities plan to burrow into the bunker in the coming weeks to see what, if anything, is inside.

Mr. Plebanczyk, the museum director, said he was quite certain they would find the Amber Room — or, “worst-case scenario,” a cache of precious paintings.

Er, let's hope they don't give it to just the Jewish victims as they weren't the only ones affected, despite the widespread "belief". If justice is to be had in that manner then all families of all victims need to be included - Roma, disabled, Serbs, etc etc.

No tunnel, ...no train....

The Amber Room will be found at the Wolfsschanze......

Quote:

WARSAW, Poland -- Explorers’ great hopes for finding a legendary Nazi “gold train” in Poland appeared dashed Wednesday when, after digging extensively, they admitted they have found “no train, no tunnel” at the site.

The legend has sparked a gold rush, drawing in explorers and treasure hunters from across Europe to Poland’s southwestern town of Walbrzych, and prompting local authorities to dream about a great inflow of tourists and money.

The local legend says in 1945, the Nazi Germans hid a train laden with gold and valuables in a secret tunnel nearby as they were fleeing the advancing Soviet army at the end of World War II.

Last week two explorers - Andreas Richter, a German, and Piotr Koper, a Pole - moved in with heavy equipment and dug deep at a site near rail tracks in Walbrzych, following comments by residents who said they had knowledge of the train’s existence.

Richter and Koper said last year that their own tests using earth-penetrating radar confirmed a train was at the site.

But the explorers’ spokesman, Andrzej Gaik, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that they found “no train, no tunnel” there and that the machines were covering over the three pits that cost 140,000 zlotys ($37,000) to dig.

Saying “hope dies last,” Gaik said a smaller-scale search using probes will resume at a nearby site in September.

The dig confirmed findings by experts from a university in Krakow last year who used magnetic equipment but found no trace of train or tunnel, Gaik said.

Historians say the existence of the train, which is said to have gone missing in May 1945, never has been conclusively proven. Polish authorities nonetheless have seemed eager to pursue any chance of recovering treasures that have sparked the imaginations of local people for decades.

At the height of the frenzy last year, the World Jewish Congress reminded Poland’s authorities that, in the case of a discovery of a treasure-laden train, any valuables belonging to Jews killed in the Holocaust must be returned to their rightful owners or their heirs.
