| John Kasich’s casual victim blaming “advice”: If you don’t want to be raped, “don’t go to parties where there’s a lot of alcohol”; It doesn't matter how earnest Kasich comes off, the message remains problematic | |

At a town hall in Watertown Friday morning, the Ohio governor answered a college freshman’s question about his plans to improve campus safety nationwide “regarding sexual violence, harassment, and rape,” with a dated reference to “coeds” and an even more dangerously dated bit of casual victim blaming. “You ought to absolutely know that if something happens to you along the lines of sexual harassment or whatever,” Kasich began, well enough, calling for increased access to rape kits, “you have a place to go where there is a confidential reporting, where there is an ability for you to access a rape kit, where that is kept confidential, but where it gives you the opportunity to be able to pursue justice, after you have had some time to reflect on it all.” Mentioning his own twin daughters, who were reportedly strolling around a college campus at the time, Kasich then told the St. Lawrence University student, “I’d also give you one bit of advice.” “Don’t go to parties where there’s a lot of alcohol.” That’s it. That’s all Kasich had to offer. No free advice for the young men in attendance, policing their recreational activities and whereabouts. Just traditional, casual victim blaming disguised as earnest, goodnatured “advice.” http://www.salon.com/2016/04/15/john_kasichs_casual_victim_blaming_advice_if_you_dont_want_to_be_raped_dont_go_to_parties_where_theres_a_lot_of_alcohol/ |

and he thinks he can beat Hillary WASHINGTON—Explaining how they froze in place and stared up at the miraculous vision in rapt wonder, members of the Republican Party leadership reported that the shimmering image of an immaculate, ideal GOP presidential candidate appeared before them for a brief moment Friday and hovered in front of the party’s headquarters in Washington. Those who witnessed the awe-inspiring vision said they felt a warm, comforting presence wash over them as the clouds parted and the luminous form of a man in his late 40s with chiseled features and perfectly parted hair descended from the sky above the Republican National Committee building. The mysterious levitating figure, who is said to have worn a brilliantly gleaming American flag lapel pin and an exquisitely tailored shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, reportedly flashed a confident yet disarming smile that, according to accounts, left several onlookers so moved that they began openly weeping. “We were heading in for another meeting about how to deal with the upcoming convention when, suddenly, this perfect figure appeared in the air above us: a conservative presidential candidate with youthful energy and an undeniable everyman charm who shone with a golden light,” said RNC chairman Reince Priebus, choking up as he described how he and other party leaders gazed in wide-eyed disbelief at the tall, handsome apparition. “After all this time, to lay eyes on a pristine, easily electable Republican—it was staggering. It felt like every burden on our party melted away the instant he appeared. Everything became calm; peaceful; still.” “He spoke only a few words, saying that we should lower corporate tax rates to boost economic growth,” Priebus added. “It felt like he was speaking directly to my soul.” In addition to shining with a resplendent, otherworldly glow, the presidential candidate was said to be possessed of great charisma and an easy confidence, providing a longed-for and abiding sense of assurance to the GOP leaders present, many of whom reportedly had to shield their eyes from the radiance of the man’s flawless visage. According to witnesses, several party operatives became so overwhelmed with emotion that they fell to their knees upon seeing the glimmering candidate give a genial wave and a quick double thumbs-up before vanishing into the air. “At last, he has come—an unsullied family-values Republican with deep pro-business sympathies and a broad appeal across all demographics, most notably independents ages 18 to 39,” said Priebus, who claimed he’d long had dreams that such a candidate would one day arrive from on high. “He is the one we have waited for. He said nothing of his experience or background, but all of us who looked upon him knew deep within us that this was a budget-cutting expert with a spotless voting record who could rally the base without alienating key conservative donors.” “It was just so beautiful,” continued Priebus, tears welling in his eyes. Many GOP officials who witnessed the event whispered reverently of the experience, saying that when they looked into the man’s eyes, they genuinely believed the mystical candidate could accomplish any policy proposal he advocated, from rolling back commercial and environmental regulations, to increasing military spending, to restricting access to women’s health services. Sources confirmed that top Republican figures from around the country have since started planning pilgrimages to the RNC offices in Washington where the immaculate candidate was seen in hopes of glimpsing the divine politician for themselves. “I don’t know when he’ll come back—it may not be until 2020 or 2024 or maybe later—but I can say with the deepest conviction that he will return to us one day,” said Priebus, speaking with a tranquil smile. “And on that day, whenever it may be, he will deliver us from all our trials and our hardships, and the GOP will be saved.” |

Polls say it's possible Kasich can beat Hillary for one simple reason - he's being ignored by the DNC because he's considered a non-factor in the election. The RNC is doing the same with Bernie - he's being ignored as a nonthreat to the GOP - and this is inflating his poll numbers. Even Trump ignores Bernie because he's perceived as a not a threat to his nomination. The GOP isn't totally stupid - they know Hillary will be the nominee so all their energy is trained on her. |

That's the democrat ideal. Preach that young men are evil and that drunk skanks bare no responsibility for placing themselves in dangerous situations. I suppose it's victim blame to tell a car-crash victim that she shouldn't have gotten behind the wheel drunk. |

If parents raise their boys the right way, they wouldn't rape women. Like John, you too are blaming the victim. Which doesn't come as a surprise after reading many of your posts. Shame on whomever raised you... |

Half of America's sons are raised by progressive democrat single mothers. Right off the bat these boys are being failed. That's right, shame on my parents for teaching me to not place myself in needless dangerous situations. |

I heard Kasich talk about this weekend he was right. He said the same thing I told both my daughter and son when they went to college. It is not blaming the victim, he was very strong about prosecuting the rapist but he went on to say that you need to be careful to take care of yourself. The fact is, alcohol does play a part in campus sexual assault. It is true that people do put drugs in drinks which is why we warned both kids. Just like you should not walk down a dark alley in the middle of the night, it is true you should take care at a party where alcohol is being abused. Should you be able to walk safely down a dark alley? Of course but the world doesn't work that way, you need to take actions to be safe. |

I think you're reading into it and twisting the words. Alcohol causes people to do stupid things, going to a party where there is going to be a lot of alcohol increases your chances of getting hurt in various ways, including rape. That doesn't mean it's the victim's fault if they get raped just as it isn't their fault if they get punched in the face at one of those parties. It's just cautionary advice, something bad could happen. I wouldn't say not go to the party but people should be well aware of the many outcomes, it's simply a safety issue not blaming the person who gets hurt.

Voting in NY is tomorrow and, although I'm not a huge supporter of Kasich, you have to compare him to Trump and Cruz. I don't find Kasich to be nearly as nauseating as those two. |

I told my son who went to UT Knoxville to avoid parties like the plague, want to have fun, drive the hour back to the Qualla and have fun. While I don't blame the victim, and I would go after rapists with a passion. Going to a party, you have to learn certain safety tips, (1) Never leave your drink alone, (2) Always go to the bathroom or outside with a friend, and (3) Know your limit when you do drink and are secure in the knowledge no one has ruffied your drink. |

Many countries use the death penalty for punishing rapists. Unless you are in India of course. |

Agreed. What he gave was good, simple advice. The people suggesting it was anything other baffle me. |
| People sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would do them harm. | |
