For decades, these cab companies were relying on the government to protect them 100%. Be careful what you wish for.

This sounds more like traditional taxi models are losing ground to new models like uber and lyft..isn't this the crux of capitalism?

It should be but the cab companies were so used to the nanny protecting them that when it came time to compete they were left ill prepared to meet the challenges of the real world...libs do the same thing to minorities in housing projects....coddle them like pet hamsters....disgusts me....

We are in the midst of serious financial setbacks,” Martinez wrote in a letter to the co-op’s members last month. “Some are due to business challenges beyond our control, and others are of our own making.”

Sounds like poor management by the taxi company is part to blame.

The cab companies under gov't protection/monopoly had no reason to provide a better experience, be forward thinking or embrace new technologies....the nanny's protectionism stifled them to the point that a few coders could topple their entire existence....the whole reason uber was created because of the crappy experience ...and the taxi companies solution? Innovate, improve, spend the few buck to match or better their technology? No their nanny dependence left them so impotent that their only way to deal the burgeoning competition was to try to get the gov't to ban them....much the same way libs do when they are presented with speech that challenges their not so enlightened world view...

Only liberals can choose not to go down the road to widespread, systematic violence.

" the latest in string of traditional taxi companies to turn to chapter 11 amid the rapid rise of ride-hailing rivals like Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc."

New products are more successful in the market. Paradigm shift. Capitalism working as intended.

Small potatoes....uber/lyft and the rest of the share economy is based on reviews a small percentage of which will be bad which quickly gets those bad apples out of the mix....(one of my companies sells software to address this very thing)

If you asked 100 experienced travelers their generic view of Uber versus Taxis my guess the overwhelming majority would view Taxis as a negative...

Then what are you wanking about? Looks like the nanny gives entrepreneurs an opportunity like it did uber and lyft.

Only because UBer/Lyft were so disruptive that btw the time the nanny tried to wield their protectionist machinations uber was too entrenched...still doesn't stop them from trying and in some cases succeeding...

But if you or I tried to come in and start a better taxi service....fuggedaboutit....

Again, you should be happy that statist enabled private monopolies are getting reamed by coder upstarts.

Except that it is an unnatural free market occurrence...if free market were allowed to exist unimpeded most of these radical pattern interrupts would not happen....they would have occurred gradually over time in an incremental advancing state....and of course the nanny will gradually exert their dominion over these new consumer friendly models....much like they are doing with AirBnB...

Private concerns have often used the "nanny" to protect and enable their interest ..with the nanny diminished..you don't think that the private concerns will to find other means to serve their agendas?
Heck..they may even be worse than the nanny was.
