University of Cincinnati study finds fracking’s bad rap is not supported

A three-year study by the University of Cincinnati in Carroll and surrounding counties determined hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has no effect on groundwater in the Utica shale region, is not being released to the public.

Dr. Amy Townsend-Small, the lead researcher for the University of Cincinnati Department of Geology, released the results during the Feb. 4 meeting of the Carroll County Concerned Citizens in Carrollton.

When asked at that meeting if the university planned to publicize the results, Dr. Amy Townsend-Small, an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati Department of Geology and the leader of the study, said there were no plans to do so. “I am really sad to say this, but some of our funders, the groups that had given us funding in the past, were a little disappointed in our results. They feel that fracking is scary and so they were hoping this data could to a reason to ban it,” she said.

And libs say scientists whose livelihoods depend on research grants (like those working on globull warming) cannot be corrupted.

Did you know Clinton was an ardent supporter of fracking before she was against the practice?
Kate Steinle was separated from her family permanently but leftists didn't seem to mind.

Clinton is not and never has been against fracking. She understands it needs to be well regulated and understood and local concerns need to be heard. But she also understands that using natural gas is a better alternative than coal and that domestic production is better than being dependent on Middle Eastern oil.

And of course a different came out when running for president.

The Democrat says she would regulate fracking out of existence.

I'm not surprised with this. As the article noted, PA has had more problems with their older wells. As it also noted, the Ohio wells may be better constructed but they could also just be newer. Longer term monitoring is needed and should be mandatory in all fracking areas.

I think the bigger problem is not the energy wells but the waste water wells. These have shown potential to cause earthquakes and I wonder if they are deep enough and well constructed enough to prevent contamination.

This study should indeed be published (although I don’t think the UofC has any rights to do so). The fact that those that funded this study will not publish it indicates that they are less interested in promoting health and safety issues than they are in promoting a ban on oil and natural gas development.

This study was localized to a small section of Ohio and the results should dispel some of the fears that these Ohio communities may have concerning fracking.

This does not mean that fracking does not pollute ground water, only that in this geologic formation, there is no evidence of methane in the water supply due to fracking. In other geological formations, the opposite has been found.

If you want people to believe in the science, then you have to publish valid scientific findings, even if they run against your political bias.
