As Donald Trump captures the mantle of presumptive Republican nominee, a new poll finds he begins his general election campaign well behind Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

The new CNN/ORC Poll, completed ahead of Trump's victory last night, found Clinton leads 54% to 41%, a 13-point edge over the New York businessman, her largest lead since last July.

...

Clinton has the edge on a range of other issues. She is more trusted than Trump on terrorism (50% Clinton to 45% Trump), immigration (51% to 44%), health care (55% to 39%), the income gap (54% to 37%), foreign policy (61% to 36%), education (61% to 34%) and climate change (63% to 30%).

Overall, voters are evenly split on their opinion of Clinton -- 49% see her favorably and the same share unfavorably. But a decidedly larger group (56%) see Trump unfavorably than see him favorably (41%).

From the cited article:
"Asked why they back Clinton or Trump, most of those behind each candidate say their preference in the matchup is more about opposing a candidate than supporting one. Among Clinton supporters, 51% said their choice was mostly about opposing Trump and 57% of Trump supporters said they went with him because they don't want Clinton in the White House."

The winner of this election, more than any other, will be whoever can decrease their opponent's favorability rating the most.

It ain't going to be pretty.
Without geometry, life is pointless.

Donald Trump is the nominee from hell: The early numbers are in, and they spell disaster for the GOP

After the 2012 election, post-mortem suggested how the GOP could stay competitive. Trump's undoing all of that work

At this point at least, it looks like Trump's plan is to drive up Hilary's negatives with personal attacks. He may kick a hole in her black base by making Carson his Veep. He has already put the good doctor in charge of making the veep list. That's how Cheney goy the job from Dubbya. Trump is also free to bait-and-switch on specific issue that are Hillary's selling points because his supporters don't give a damn whether he follows whatever platform the party comes up with.

This strategy might work. Given Trump's negatives, which are even higher than Hillary's he doesn't have a lot of other options. The Dems are in a tough spot because Sanders is pretty much immune to that sort of attack even though Trump would make a big fuss about Sanders being a Communist. The Sanders movement is clearly the future of the Democratic Party and Clinton is, as Robert Stout put it, standing on quicksand.

By this summer, the Sanders movement will be supporting the Clinton movement and it will be the GOP that's standing in the quicksand of its own ideology.

As we all know, the popular vote in a general election for President does not make any difference (President Gore!). Soon the polling companies will be issuing state-by-state polls and tallying the Electoral College numbers, which will give a much clearer indication of who is leading in the general election. My guess is that Mr. Trump is in trouble...

Election analyst flips 11 states toward Democrats due to Trump

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/278997-election-analyst-shifts-11-states-and-congressional

“This has been an exceedingly unpredictable year,” the analyst said. “Although we remain convinced that Hillary Clinton is very vulnerable and would probably lose to most other Republicans, Donald Trump's historic unpopularity with wide swaths of the electorate — women, millennials, independents and Latinos — make him the initial November underdog.”

Colorado, Florida, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin were all shifted from toss-up states to leaning Democratic. The “solid Republican” states Missouri and Indiana were downgraded to “likely Republican.” New Mexico is now solidly Democratic, and North Carolina is a toss-up after leaning Republican.

I suspect all six hear voices.............
This is something I've never understood about many Americans: If they see a homeless person on the street talking about what God says to them, they'll cross the street to get away from the crazy person. If a politician says God told them to run for office, that same person nods their head in agreement and doesn't think twice about the statement. People are strange...
