A state of emergency has been declared in the province of Alberta in Canada after a wildfire forced all 88,000 residents of Fort McMurray to flee.
Officials say the fast-moving blaze could destroy much of the city.
The fire, which broke out on Sunday in the heart on the country's oil sands region, has gutted 1,600 buildings, including a new school.

My wife observed that the Canadians evacuating the burning town were only driving on one side of the highway........... :oyvey

It's not just Fort McMurray despite it getting all the press. North Eastern British Columbia is also burning. A couple of small fires in Northern Saskatchewan at the moment but we're preparing for another La Ronge-type fire (last year a fire nearly three times the size of the Fort Mac fire nearly reached the northern Saskatchewan town of La Ronge).

No precipitation forecast at present.

And Billings is nothing. The smoke from Canadian fires sometimes reach as far south as Oklahoma.

It's already at 100,000 hectares (247,000 acres) unless rain comes soon that's just the beginning.

This is tragic, hopefully we can learn from it so that other people don't have to go through as much hell the next time.

Buried charcoal records show that burning is now more severe than at any time in at least 10,000 years up there. Global warming has pushed us into a new climate with more dangerous fires. Past defences won't be sufficient: we need to work out what will be effective at reducing the risk that more people will lose their livelihoods in future. And who's going to pay.

The thing is with places like Fort McMurray, they are surrounded by boreal forest. There really is and has been no effective defence once a fire gets this big. At least further south fields can be plowed up, the suppressing chemicals from the planes can reach the ground, etc.

I've worked forest fires like this. Both the Fort McMurray and High Level fires are going to be a stone bitch to put out without rain. The Fort St. John (BC) fire will be easier as it's near a lot of farmland.

Can't you just chop the forest down near the city?

That might sound dumb and expensive but what I'm getting at is: can you do something to prepare when it's not already burning? Might be expensive, but we're living in a world with more fires than there were when we first settled these places.

If some politician even suggested chopping down all the trees in the area the people of Fort Mac (and most other places above the treeline) would raise holy hell and demand the nearest streetlight be turned into a gallows.

The possibility of a forest fire is something that all of us who live on or above the treeline accept. We just pay our insurance and hope lightening doesn't strike nearby, or some out of work firefighter doesn't decide it's time to get back to work (It's been known to happen).

The cost to re-build will be immensely high; as will medical cost.

Fortunately everybody but first responders have been evacuated. Medical costs (which are taxpayer-provided anyway) will be minimal.
