When my wife was pregnant this year, I decided to try something: to see if I could find out how much my son's birth would cost before it took place. This video is the story of what happened:

One of the hallmarks of free market capitalism is pricing transparency. The fact that this does not exist in our healthcare system should tell you how far it has deviated from the "free market"...

Guess what? Maternity care is an electable procedure covered under health insurance by government mandate.

Just like higher education - costs have gone from several thousand to tens of thousands since the mandate, which was implemented in the 90's I believe.

This isn't the free market at work, this is government meddling in the marketplace.

thread fail.

yup.

Although US healthcare is much better then the backwards rationed care of western europe - it still needs massive improvement which starts with government withdrawing mandates and regulations.

Perhaps if government backed off of marijuana, the demand for euphoria could be met in more natural ways.

Oh yeah? The government shouldn't be regulating heroin either.

You don't think there is a marketable demand for euphoria?

I guess Jim Beam is to blame for all the alcoholics - eh?

Pharmaceutical marketing, particularly in the late 90s and early 2000s, used the idea - spread and pushed by certain pain specialists - that opiate painkillers - Vicodin, Percocet and later OxyContin, of course - were non-addictive when used to treat pain - in every human being, apparently," he said. "The nuance got lost, and pharmaceutical companies picked that idea right up and ran with it."

Pretty much every drug that makes you feel good can be physically or mentally additive.

Only a xxxxing moron would think a drug based on opium wouldn't have additive qualities.

‘YOU WANT A DESCRIPTION OF HELL?’ OXYCONTIN’S 12-HOUR PROBLEM

http://static.latimes.com/oxycontin-part1/
Perhaps if government backed off of marijuana, the demand for euphoria could be met in more natural ways.
The Times investigation, based on thousands of pages of confidential Purdue documents and other records, found that:

Purdue has known about the problem for decades. Even before OxyContin went on the market, clinical trials showed many patients weren’t getting 12 hours of relief. Since the drug’s debut in 1996, the company has been confronted with additional evidence, including complaints from doctors, reports from its own sales reps and independent research.

yabut, its da gubmint fault!

The company has held fast to the claim of 12-hour relief, in part to protect its revenue. OxyContin’s market dominance and its high price — up to hundreds of dollars per bottle — hinge on its 12-hour duration. Without that, it offers little advantage over less expensive painkillers.

yabut, its da gubmint fault!

When many doctors began prescribing OxyContin at shorter intervals in the late 1990s, Purdue executives mobilized hundreds of sales reps to “refocus” physicians on 12-hour dosing. Anything shorter “needs to be nipped in the bud. NOW!!” one manager wrote to her staff.

yabut, its da gubmint fault!

Purdue tells doctors to prescribe stronger doses, not more frequent ones, when patients complain that OxyContin doesn’t last 12 hours. That approach creates risks of its own. Research shows that the more potent the dose of an opioid such as OxyContin, the greater the possibility of overdose and death.

yabut, its da gubmint fault!

More than half of long-term OxyContin users are on doses that public health officials consider dangerously high, according to an analysis of nationwide prescription data conducted for The Times.

yabut, its da gubmint fault!

Careful statist - i'm not sure if you should be accusing others of moral relativism. You want to steal my income to regulate companies that make painkillers.

That said - I am not sure what it is exactly that you want to do here. I already offered you a solution that has been proven to work
