West Virginia state Senate candidate Richard Ojeda was brutally beaten during a cookout Sunday — just two days before his primary — and nearly run over with a pickup truck, Ojeda told NBC News.

Jonathan Stuart Porter, 41, was in custody Sunday. State Trooper Zachary Holden told NBC News he was being held on suspicion of malicious assault, malicious attempted assault and felony destruction of property.

In an interview from his hospital room in Charleston, Ojeda, 45, a Democrat and military veteran whose primary contest is Tuesday, said he had been at a barbecue in the mountains about 60 miles southwest of Charleston when Porter asked for a bumper sticker.

The West Virginia state Senate candidate who was brutally beaten two days before the primary ended up winning his ballot box battle Tuesday — scoring an underdog victory against an incumbent.

Richard Ojeda, a retired U.S. Army major, scored his first political victory after a violent attack at a cookout earned him unlikely national attention. Ojeda, 45, defeated one-term state Sen. Art Kirkendoll in the Democratic race for District 7.

He will now face Republican Jordan Ray Bridges in the November general election.

Ojeda spent the last two days before the primary recovering in a hospital from a bizarre beatdown at a barbeque, which left him with several bone fractures and lacerations.

This one smells fishy....
Only liberals can choose not to go down the road to widespread, systematic violence.

When the fishy is real, post it. It's unusual for sure.
