The alliance between Podemos and United Left makes them the chief left-wing force in Spanish electoral politics.

Anti-austerity alliance captures vote of Spain's crisis-hit poor
Quote:

Yolanda Yeste lost her flat and two jobs as a hospital security guard during Spain's five-year economic crisis and its aftermath.

Still unable to find work, the 54-year-old is one of millions of Spaniards who have yet to be touched by an economic recovery and who voted for anti-austerity party Podemos in an election last December.

No clear winner emerged from the ballot and political parties failed to form a coalition government, so voters go back to the polls on June 26 for the second election in six months.

Yeste says she will cast her vote for a new alliance between Podemos and smaller left-wing party.

Spain's anti-austerity parties pass Socialists ahead of election
Quote:

A coalition including Spain's anti-austerity party Podemos will take second place at the June 26 election, overtaking the more established Socialists, though the vote remains too fragmented for any clear government majority, polls showed on Sunday.

The election is being held after an inconclusive vote on Dec. 20 failed to deliver a mandate to govern to any single party and political leaders could not reach an accord on a coalition large enough to take a majority in parliament.

While the ruling center-right People's Party (PP) would win the most votes, according to two separate polls published in El Mundo and El Pais, it remains without a large enough presence in the lower house to take a second term alone.

Leftist Podemos gaining support before Spanish election: poll
Quote:

A leftist alliance led by anti-austerity force Podemos will make big gains in Spain's national election on June 26, according to a closely-watched opinion poll on Thursday that cast new doubt over the complexion of the country's next government.

The survey, based on 17,600 interviews and deemed the most reliable to predict election results, showed the vote would be split between four main parties and four smaller ones, confirming a new era of political fragmentation and uncertainty in Spain after four decades of a stable two-party system.
