Barack Obama is to visit Hiroshima this month - the first serving US president to travel to the Japanese city since it was hit by a US nuclear bomb in 1945.

The visit will be part of an Asian trip from 21-28 May that will also take in Vietnam.

Quote:

U.S. President Barack Obama said on Sunday his visit to Hiroshima, the first city to suffer an atomic bombing, would emphasize friendly ties between former enemies, and reiterated he would not apologize for the devastating attack.

U.S. lifts arms ban on old foe Vietnam as regional tensions simmer
Quote:

The United States announced an end to its embargo on sales of lethal arms to Vietnam on Monday, an historic step that draws a line under the two countries' old enmity and underscores their shared concerns about Beijing's growing military clout.

The move came during President Barack Obama's first visit to Hanoi, which his welcoming hosts described as the arrival of a warm spring and a new chapter in relations between two countries that were at war four decades ago.

Despite Obama’s Moves, Asian Nations Skeptical of U.S. Commitment
Quote:

SINGAPORE — When President Obama announced Monday that he was ending a half-century-long arms embargo against Vietnam, it was another milestone in his long-running ambition to recast America’s role in Asia — a “pivot” as he once called it, designed to realign America’s foreign policy so it can reap the benefits of Asia’s economic and strategic future.

Yet as Mr. Obama’s time in office comes to an end, Asian nations are deeply skeptical about how much they can rely on Washington’s commitment and staying power in the region. They sense that for the first time in memory, Americans are questioning whether their economic and defense interests in Asia are really that vital.

Hiroshima memory must never fade, Obama says on historic visit
Quote:

Barack Obama has become the first serving US president to visit Hiroshima since the World War Two nuclear attack.

Mr Obama said the memory of 6 August 1945 must never fade, but did not apologise for the US attack - the world's first nuclear bombing.

Mr Obama spoke to two survivors and in an address called on nations to pursue a world without nuclear weapons.

At least 140,000 people died in Hiroshima and another 74,000 three days later in a second bombing in Nagasaki.

Trump needs to focus more so on the male vote. He should have nationalized the Boy Scouts when they decided to admit girls.

So should we sell arms to Japan, Germany or Italy? How far do we go back? England, after all we fought several wars with them and they burnt our capitol.

The fact is Vietnam has become an important player in countering Chinese interest in the South China Sea. Life moves on and so do old foes.

He should have apologized. What was done was barbaric, regardless of the justification back then. In fact, we ought to apologize profusely to the Japanese people affected by the internment camps, propaganda against them, criminalization of their being who they are, etc.

Whether or not there are positives in that era, there were also detestable actions and behavior.

Would we say the same (no apology) about racism/slavery? If bad decisions happen, we need to own up to it and shed this bulls**t macho, no apologies approach. We're A country in the world, not the only one. s**t happens, we're not perfect.

Japan remembers Hiroshima, urges world to follow Obama and visit

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-japan-hiroshima-idUSKCN10G2IG?il=0

Japan marked the 71st anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima on Saturday as its mayor urged world leaders to follow in U.S. President Barack Obama's footsteps and visit, and ultimately rid the world of nuclear arms.

A peace bell tolled at 8:15 a.m. (2315 GMT on Friday), the time a U.S. warplane dropped the bomb. About 50,000 participants including aging survivors and dignitaries held a moment of silence at a memorial ceremony in the western Japanese city.

Obama this year became the first incumbent U.S. president to visit Hiroshima, and he urged nuclear powers, including his own, to have the courage to escape the logic of fear and pursue a world without nuclear weapons.

"The president's words showed he was touched by the spirit of Hiroshima, which refuses to accept the 'absolute evil'," the mayor, Kazumi Matsui, told the crowd, referring to the weapons.

The United States dropped the bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, killing thousands of people instantly and about 140,000 by the end of that year.

U.S. forces dropped another atomic bomb on the southern city of Nagasaki on Aug. 9. Japan surrendered six days later.

"I once again urge the leaders of all nations to visit the A-bombed cities," Matsui said as cicadas buzzed away under the mid-summer sun.

[b]"As President Obama confirmed in Hiroshima, such visits will surely etch the reality of the atomic bombings in each heart."
