face it - government has built too many roads and now is bawing because they can't maintain them.

The roads that are worth a s**t need to be sold off.
Ah... do you drive a car? You sound really naïve. I don't know where you live or drive but most places I drive in the States, there are too few highways, traffic jams abound. And selling off roads is nonsensical. Rural roads where there are too few users to be a profitable option would create a heavier more expensive burden on lower income rural folk.

Oh... so because some crony politicians in Alaska wasted a few hundred million bucks on one bridge, you make a blanket statement about the entire US highway system. I see. Using that logic we need to cut the military budget or privatize it because the military spends way too much money on things like $900 screwdrivers.

Yes.

Its pretty much representative of every government infrastructure project.

No utility - just a public works project that gets some low IQ douchbag elected.

Now everyone is bawing because you have to do the maintenance.

Its a a fecking joke.

So we agree. The Constitution is obsolete, needs to be scrapped and totally rewritten.

wtf is that going to accomplish? The federal government stopped following the constitution 150 years ago.

the solution is to move road building responsibilities away from the federal government, at least to local governments.

Privatized highways are a real thing - and with a bankrupt government I am sure a private company will pick it up in a liquidation sale. The ROI can be through tolls or commercial leases of land along the road. Corporations will be beholden to its investors to make a profit - and therefore beholden to its consumers. Only roads that have demand will be built. Furthermore - with access to corridors, companies can experiment with different technologies for revenue generation - such as induction plating for constant charging of electric vehicles as well as elevated high speed rail or HyperLoop. technologies for less/more efficient maintenance can also be used - since these road maintenance companies wont be in some bureaucrats pocket anymore.

I realize that will cause spasms with statists that want to maintain this monopoly, but the truth is if the road building is only 3% of the budget and the government still cant (or wont) manage it - that is an indication that it will always be xxxxed.

So if politicians aren't following the constitution and serving their constituencies why would they waste tax dollars on stupid unnecessary projects?

Oboy, toll booths every mile and a half, sounds like a plan

Of course theres also the usual route of ''privatization'' which is digging into the public tax system. Studies show that in order to get at public tax revenues, a huge bureaucracy is built around it to make sure they dont totally rob the treasury blind, similar to how private contractors took the taxpayer to the cleaners in Iraq and Afghanistan to the tune of over a trillion or so dollars

Then there's privatized prisons, where companies put the government under contract to assure the prisons stay full

Privatization is a scam Blackbeard the pirate invented, then they called it ''free booting''

Its quite telling that you require straw man arguments in all of your replies. Its obvious that is the market used that option (and I didn't say it was the only one) that it would be a wireless trigger that would have no stopping or interactions. It might even be a monthly usage charge that you sign up for - I don't know. Besides - many states already have toll booths every couple miles. Drive down I-90 in New York and you still have unionized pigs handing out tickets all day, and you wonder why the roads are not maintained!

Thats government, not the market which is simply reacting to the conditions set by bureaucrats. My proposal would be that the Federal DOT and whatever state DOTs that require it declare bankruptcy and sell the roads to whom ever will buy them. Then whatever the proceeds are should be given back to the people as a tax break, or a check.

Then there's privatized prisons, where companies put the government under contract to assure the prisons stay full

So now you are going to complain about the government judicial system and bureaucrats handing out favors? Your idealogy created that buddy - not mine.

Privatization is a scam Blackbeard the pirate invented, then they called it ''free booting''

Privatization, or in other words Capitalism is why you are living better then any human in the past. You have a higher standard of living then Gorbachev and the entire Politburo did. Feel free to submit your self to North Korea where the Marxist revolution is trying to take place.

Yes they listen to their constituents - during election time of course. Roads going nowhere are necessary for government job creation.
