More than four-fifths of America’s metropolitan areas have seen household incomes decline this century, according to new research that exposes the politically charged reality of middle-class decline at the heart of this year’s presidential election.

I think his point was that people with good incomes were moving out of metropolitan areas, bringing the aggregate down?
I can't be arsed atm to look at whether or not that's true, but it sounds reasonable

Real wages in general have been in decline since the 1980s.
