Senators Richard Blumenthal and Edward Markey said passengers often bring extra items through the security screening process to save money.
They asked major US airlines to suspend the fees during the busy summer season.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has struggled with long queues at major airports.

Maybe if we just let Billy Bob and Joe Dokes carry their loaded guns on to planes we wouldn't need all that expensive security screening. We could just shoot the bad guys before they take over the plane.

I have a better idea...Totally eliminate TSA and save the many billions they have cost, not to mention irritation of passengers...TSA has not stopped even one terrorist attack...The program was designed to give passengers a false sense of security and the fantasy the government is being effective............ :usa:

You should move to the Congo. You would fit in well over there. No taxes, not police, little government. Just an occasional band of armed militia. Lots of opportunities too, if you survive.

How do you know that the TSA hasn't stopped something that didn't happen?
Do ya think maybe the very presence of inspection is a deterrent to attack?

Jeebus...I hate to hear that sorry argument.

According to the article:

'Many airlines introduced baggage fees in 2008 to cope with soaring fuel costs.

Despite historically low oil prices and record airline profits, the fees have not been revoked.'

^So the baggage fees were added in 2008 for a reason. That reason is no longer in play. Time to drop those fees. I don't think that will solve the problem completely. Loosen up some money from the federal budget for more TSA employees.

I did find it interesting that the Airlines want to protect their profits by not reducing fees, but are insisting that more federal dollars be spent to provide more TSA agents.

Sounds like taxpayer dollars being used to subsidize corporate profits, to me.

That would be a good idea. It adds to check in time, and overloads carry-on baggage, which increases boarding time.

They went into effect right after the TSA implemented additional security checks.

So what if it does correlate? Will change your position on government intervention in the marketplace?

Nope.

Pro-tip - what happens when you gate check bags and not get charged?

You bypass security.
