BEIRUT — Something significant happened in the last few days of April, but it seems the only person who noticed was Stephen Cohen, a professor emeritus of Russian studies at New York University and Princeton University. In a recorded interview, Cohen notes that a section of the Russian leadership is showing signs of restlessness, focused on President Vladimir Putin’s leadership. We are not talking of street protesters. We are not talking coups against Putin — his popularity remains above 80 percent and he is not about to be displaced. But we are talking about serious pressure being applied to the president to come down from the high wire along which he has warily trod until now. Putin carries, at one end of his balancing pole, the various elites more oriented toward the West and the “Washington Consensus“ and, at the pole’s other end, those concerned that Russia faces both a real military threat from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and a hybrid geo-financial war as well. He is being pressed to come down on the side of the latter, and to pry the grip of the former from the levers of economic power that they still tightly hold. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alastair-crooke/putin-west-war_b_9991162.html? |

Putin could probably end sanctions against Russia if he would cut off all supplies of natural gas and oil to the West this winter......No war is necessary for him to defeat the West....This would be a whole new kind of cold war.............

Let him try. Diversification is not word in the Soviet Union's dictionary. Other countries seek ways to make themselves competitive such as offering services and goods. Russian mail order bribes won't solve their economic woes. The Soviet Union think oil will power their country for the next 100 years. |

Putin gotta hard job to keep the former USSR together. Should he want to prepare for war, the Russian army needs more funding & military equipment. He should try to mend relations with the West before it is too late. |

Some think he has mended fences with the West, but they continue economic sanctions against Russia....Putin needs to increase pressure on the West...What can the West do to him what they are not already doing to him ???............

Putin knows the only country that can save the Russian economy is the US. Putin can rattle his saber all he wants. |

Well, Cohen cannot be wrong, even if he is the only one who notices that Putin is on the brink of being pressed to start a war, a nuclear one if we believe another NATO cohen... ![]() http://unitedstates.com/topic/8438242/1/#new Is it a popular game in the West - who frightens himself more with most crazy stuff?

Russia/Soviet Union haven't learned how to control oil prices or trade oil in rubles yet. Until then, let Putin say whatever he wants. |

Want to get Putin to back off, start a war with China. It will happen soon in the South China Sea. Several tomahawks can level those phony islands and there's not a damn thing China can do about it. |

Not a bad idea, and then we'll get a chance to get a leader who really cares for and defends our interests. Putin is too weak and submissive, in Ukraine he betrayed Russians, as well. If Putin is removed there may be certain turmoil and even ceveral Muslim regions may (hopefully) break off, like Chechnya, but then most probably patriotic forces will come to power ![]() Not pro-Western oligarkhs, who rule Russia now.
