“I apologized right away and said that I am so sorry she did that,” her mother told local news station ABC 7. “I appreciate that they’re trying to keep our kids safe, I really do. But there needs to be some common sense. It blows bubbles.” The mother spoke anonymously with ABC7 but identified herself to Fox 31 as “Emma.” She said hadn’t realized that her daughter had put the toy in her backpack before heading to school. The school released a statement on Tuesday, standing by the suspension: While we hear and understand the parents of this student being concerned about this discipline in light of the student’s age and type of item, this suspension is consistent with our district policy as well as how Southeast has handled similar situations throughout this school year. This has involved similar situations where students have brought items such as Nerf guns to school and also received one-day suspensions. The bringing of weapons, real or facsimile, to our schools by students can not only create a potential safety concern but also cause a distraction for our students in the learning process. Our schools, particularly Southeast because of past instances with students bringing fake weapons to school, make a point of asking parents to be partners in making sure students are not bringing these items to school. This includes asking parents to check backpacks.

This is almost as stupid as the time the kid got suspended for chewing his pop tart in to a handgun shape. |

Zero tolerance can absolutely be a ridiculous concept. We do not live in a world of simply black and white, context matters a great deal. We've given up rational thought in exchange for false safety. |

I am certain that back when these "zero tolerance" rules were being instituted everybody assumed it meant zero tolerance for real events rather than the fantasies of unhinged school administrators. I can just about guarantee that when it was proposed that the schools have a zero tolerance policy requiring automatic suspension of a student who brings a firearm to school, the people making the proposal thought that the person meting out the punishment would use common sense. No reasonable person would consider a pop tart chewed into the shape of a firearm to be a firearm. No reasonable person would consider a bubble gun to be a firearm. Leftist school administrators are not reasonable people and that is the source of the problem. I do not know that the administrator is leftist but I figure they are probably a union member and odds are they lean to the left. Seriously though, for my 7th grade science fair project I built a laser which I then used to ignite a piece of flash paper during my presentation. It was spectacular and today it would probably get me arrested instead of applauded as it did then. Edited by Demagogue, May 20 2016, 12:05 PM.

Here we go, "Leftists". It is described here as "District Policy". That's the local control that conservatives always are screaming for. So we don't know the background of the policy makers but it must be the left doing this and local control, now not so loved. :oyvey |

Statistically most teachers union members are likely to lean to the left. Statistically, most people who identify with the "right" side of the political aisle support the right to bear arms and dislike silly bans on weapons. Statistically most folks on the left support gun control and more stringent controls on weapons of all types. So I thought that there was a decent chance that the policies were are seeing here came about due to support from folks who are on the left side of the aisle. I did not think that was an unreasonable conclusion based upon statistical analysis and history. As for local control, I am all for it. If this community thinks that this is appropriate punishment for this offense then it is and should be within their power to demand this type of punishment. That does not mean that I from Florida should not laugh at them about their silly policies from my point of view. I think the $15 minimum wage and crazy state tax rates in California are going to be a disaster for the state eventually. With that said, I do not begrudge the people of that state their right to govern themselves in the way they see fit. |

Sounds like a parent that either doesn't pay close attention to what the kid does, or one that is using their kid to push their own personal agenda. |
