China's Science Revolution

China is super-sizing science.
Quote:

From building the biggest experiments the world has ever seen to rolling out the latest medical advances on a massive scale and pushing the boundaries of exploration from the deepest ocean to outer space - China’s scientific ambitions are immense.
Just a few decades ago the nation barely featured in the world science rankings. Now, in terms of research spending and the number of scientific papers published, it stands only behind the US.
But despite this rapid progress, China faces a number of challenges.
Here are five key science projects that illustrate its enormous strengths, as well as some of its weaknesses, and may help answer the question whether China can become a global leader in research.

Of the five projects covered by the article I found these three to be of particular interest (to me).

- The biggest radio telescope
- Race to the deep
- Open space

The ancient science giant is waking up again.

Quote:

In ancient times, China was a world leader in science, famed for four great inventions - the compass, papermaking, printing and gunpowder. But over the centuries, as the ruling dynasties placed more focus on the arts, progress stagnated.
And in the 1960s, in the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution, things got even worse. Many intellectuals and academics were forced to move to the countryside, and most scientific research came to a halt.
But projects like the Fast telescope are powerful symbols of a scientific renaissance. In 2013, China’s research and development spending overtook Europe’s and it is set to outstrip the US’s by 2020.

China's government has always had an amazing capacity for getting things done. The Great Wall took centuries and it's still there. Civil engineering has always been amazing. I think of those terraced farmlands and the Three Gorges Dam. It isn't the politics because the Chinese have been this way from pre-feudal times right through the Communist Party era. Chinese people are smart, they work hard and they take a long view.

Here in America, we seem to be falling apart. Not just our roads, bridges, airports and water systems but our social fabric as well. We really haven't had a spirit of gung ho (in the original Chinese sense of "work together") since the days of community barn raisings. Nobody plans ahead any more. Everything is about a quick buck for me, me, me!

Looking at the long-term trends, the future of US-China global competition doesn't seem very bright for America's kids.

Ever the positive one eh Mr Stout?
But yes, they do indeed need to work on those issues and I think they are.
In fact, last time I checked, they even seem to be not quite all dead yet .... ;)

Smart move. The future will belong to those with technological reach. The US needs to refocus.

You sure about zero innovation? :)

China unveils 'straddling bus' design to beat traffic jams
Quote:

A Beijing company has unveiled spectacularly futuristic designs for a pollution-busting, elevated bus capable of gliding over the nightmarish mega-jams for which urban China has become notorious.
Plans for the so-called Transit Explore Bus or TEB were showcased earlier this month at a technology expo in the Chinese capital.

We already have that in the Bay Area. It's called BART. Runs in the middle of the freeway. It's nothing new or innovative. If you increase the size of the BART train, same concept.

FYI, I read Guardian UK not Guardian US. :P

Even so, I see that Guardian US has acknowledged openly what one of its journalists did wrong. That's transparency and professionalism. I hope RT will learn from Guardian US .... but I doubt it. :)

Lol, Stef, the Western press lies professionally and confesses in it only if cought, and does it maybe in 1% of such cases, if lie is not deliberate and intentional :)

Really, Siberian .... get a grip and give that vodka a rest. ;)
In case you did not notice we're going way OFF TOPIC.
If you like you can start another thread to debate which press is 100% "honest" and unbiased till the cows come home. Good luck with that one, but you know what?
It would be truly, truly
