Pakistani men can beat wives 'lightly,' Islamic council says

(CNN)The leader of a Pakistani Islamic council has proposed a bill that allows husbands to "lightly beat" their wives as a form of discipline.

In the 75-page proposal, Mohammad Khan Sheerani suggests a light beating is acceptable should the need arise to punish a woman. The proposal bans forceful beating, saying only a small stick is necessary to instill fear.

A man who asks to be able to beat a woman in order to be considered a man is no man at all. What is really amazing is that this is part of a 75 page bill, one could only shudder as what the rest of the pages entail.

As I said before, it's only fair if she gets to lightly poison his food.

Thing is, once you bring physical violence into a situation you're the one crossing the line. Doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman doing it.

I would rather not see religion having such an influence over any nation, if anything it's what keeps a nation a "backwards society".

It's not a bill - it's a non-binding suggestion by an Islamic think-tank set up by the military government (Junta) in the early 60's.

Quote:

Created by a military government in 1961, the Council of Islamic ideology (CII) is a 20-member constitutional body that advises the government on religious aspects of the law and society - but its recommendations are not binding.

The constitution says CII members should be "well-qualified". It specifies that the council should have at least two retired judges, four members with a minimum of of 15 years of experience in Islamic research and teaching, and that members should have an "understanding of the economic, political, legal or administrative problems of Pakistan".

In practice though, this definition has been stretched to include men from religious pressure groups whose careers have been limited to administering or teaching in religious seminaries where contemporary knowledge is looked down upon.

So many of the CII's proposals have not been taken seriously by leaders.

****

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah rejected the proposals, saying: "Islam does not allow any violence, whether against women or children."

Lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jahangir told Geo TV that the proposals amounted to "the humiliation of women".

The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan termed the proposals "ridiculous", and recommended the abolition of the CII.

***

The CII proposals were a response to a women's protection law passed by the Punjab government in March.

That law wanted to make it easier for female victims of domestic violence to report abuse, and introduced procedures to keep the perpetrator away from the victim until the dispute was resolved.

The CII was opposed to the law, and declared it un-Islamic.

Basically, they're the equivalent in mentality to your Southern Baptist "gays burn in hell - God punishes with tornadoes" variety.

Bottom line - monotheism is a mental disease.

After repeated warnings it's supposed to be something light that doesn't really cause damage. So, no to the lashes and such obviously. lol

Frankly it doesn't matter how lightly it is, it's the fact that the government is encouraging and condoning any sort of behavior as such. Religion is toxic.

The Pakistani government IS NOT encouraging and condoning anything. I repeat, this is an Islamic think-tank and any suggestion that it makes is not binding and more often than not, ignored by the Pakistani Government. The fact is that the Pakistani Government has enacted legislation to protect women in domestic violence situations.

This idiocy is the subsequent reaction to the said legislation by the Islamic think tank..

Can we please drop the knee-jerk, misinformed, indignation and stop labelling the Pakistani Government unjustly.

Cheers

Unjustly...there is a reason why we didn't tell the Pakistani Government our spec ops team went in for Obama, Pakistan intelligence is so riddled with Al-Queda and Taliban sympathizers as to the point they should rename themselves as Al-Queda East.

Yes, and the Americans have the alarming habit of shooting up our soldiers but neither this observation nor your one is relevant.

The case is that posters are completely skewing this whole affair. It is a Islamic advisory board that issue the controversial report - not the Pakistani Government. The Pakistani Government tabled a bill to protect women in domestic violence situations, which sparked off these idiots. The Pakistani Government has not the least intention of adopting the board's suggestions.

Freaks, unwittingly and unjustly, is dumping this at the door of the Pakistani Government and you, when this obvious error is pointed out, rather than taking onboard the correction, go off at a tangent concerning how the Pakistani Military Intelligence is in cahoots with the Taliban.

Would either of you, at the very least, read the quote that I posted from the BBC.

Cheers
