| Pakistani men can beat wives 'lightly,' Islamic council says; so refreshing to see leaders involved with the religion of peace willing to moderate their positions and compromise! | |

Perhaps what is relevant is that Islam does not prohibit "light" domestic violence, while Jesus at least talked about not throwing the first stone...It was easy for him to talk trash as he wasn't married...Mohammed had several wives..........

Yes but they also have to bend to religion, granted they have opposing forces within but it's still there. It is what it is. No knee-jerk reaction necessary. Generally speaking Pakistan is one of the other countries I do try to follow up on because of friends there, I don't like religion having so much influence over government policies. I don't like it here, I don't like it anywhere. |

No, I got the correction Hugh, and I'm not going to dispute that...my problem is, I don't see the Pakistani government giving the finger to it's religous council as opposed to our government telling our religious nuts to go f off |

Was that supposed to be an admission that the report was NOT by the Pakistani Government, as you previously claimed? Just wondering because it sure as hell doesn't look like one. Cheers Hughmac |

You must have missed this from the BBC article that I quoted: Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah rejected the proposals, saying: "Islam does not allow any violence, whether against women or children." In other words, as in many previous instances involving the said advisory board, the Government is ignoring their twisted proposals. Cheers Hughmac |

Amerians expect to see religion exalting government. Religion supports the military in its cemeteries and the Congress in its ceremonies. Religious oaths back up the power of the courts. Government touts its divine approval with "in God we trust" on its money and "under God" and in its kids' mouths in school. Anyone who questions this supporting link is roundly denounced In the Islamic world, Muslims expect to see goverment exalting religion. Government is expected to enforce religious rulings and even mosque attendance. Civil status and economy are determined by religious texts. Naturally, we Americans regard the other approach as primitive, arbitrary and destructive. The only exceptions to this harsh condemnation of religion for exalting government are found among Orthodox Jews in Israel and fundamentalist Christians in the Bible Belt. God has a special plan for America. We are the new Chosen People. No wonder everyone wants to be like us Americans. We are better than everybody else. |

Hi, Freaks and Tsalagi. Just want to clear up that I am not defending this Islamic advisory boards suggestion, nor the board itself - I think they suck and the world would be a better place if they disbanded and got themselves an honest job. I think that the three monotheist religions are throwbacks to medieval mindset and they differ only in degree; not in essence. On the other hand, the glee that my American posting colleagues jump on anything about Islam in order to demonize it is predictable and tiresome. I am not suggesting that either Freaks or Tsalagi fall into this category; they don't. Cheers Hughmac Edited by Hughmac, Jun 1 2016, 04:13 AM.
