NOAA has updated its extensive U.S. coastal tide gauge data measurement records (http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/sltrends/sltrends_us.htm) to include data through year 2015. These measurements include tide gauge data coastal locations for 25 West Coast, Gulf Coast and East Coast states along the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. In addition 7 Pacific island groups and 6 Atlantic island groups also have coastal location tide gauge data measurements updated as well.

In all more than 200 coastal locations are included in these measurements with more than 100 of these coastal locations with recorded data periods in excess of 50 years in duration. None of these updated NOAA tide gauge measurement data records show coastal location sea level rise acceleration occurring anywhere on the U.S. coasts or Pacific or Atlantic island groups.

In June of 1988 testimony was provided before Congress by various scientists, including NASA’s Dr. James Hansen, claiming that man made greenhouse gas emissions were responsible for increasing global temperatures with the the New York Times reporting (http://www.nytimes.com/1988/06/24/us/global-warming-has-begun-expert-tells-senate.html?pagewanted=all ) “Global Warming Has Begun, Experts Tells Senate”.

The debate is over, done, finito ....toast.

There is NO accelerated increase of sea levels. None. Nowhere. T'aint happinen. All those loopy animations of Manhattan under water, people clinging to tree's in the Seychelles, and photo's of only the top of the Eiffel Tower appearing over the city of Paris are all, ....nonsense. Bupkis.

So, how does one stop a 1.5 trillion dollar industry in its tracks? All of those new "climate scientists" out of work? What do they do with their lives now, plant tomato's in their gardens?

As soon as the sea levels start to rise, this time for real, wake me up, OK? But, please stop with the 'global warming' nonsense....!

Sea levels are now GOING DOWN in New York and Washington...

Hopefully everybody remember Sallenger’s “hot spots” of sea level acceleration along the East Coast of the US.

Asbury H. Sallenger Jr, Kara S. Doran & Peter A. Howd, Hotspot of accelerated sea-level rise on the Atlantic coast of North America, Nature Climate Change 2, 884–888 (2012), doi:10.1038/nclimate1597

This was one of the many examples of bad science misinterpreting the sea level oscillations by cherry picking the time window.

As 6 more years of data have been collected, let see if the hotspots are now the “hottest on record” or if they have cooled down.

The logic of Sallenger & co. was based on the comparison of the rate of rise of sea levels over the first and second half of time windows of 60, 50 and 40 years, i.e. the comparison of the rate of rise over the first and the last 30, 25 and 20 years respectively of these 60, 50 and 40 years windows.

This did not make any sense to me, as if you do have sinusoidal oscillations of periodicity 60 years, positive and negative phases of 30 years, and you select the end of the time widows at the end of one positive phase, this way you will always have “positive acceleration” even if there is none, and everybody knew about periods and phasing of the natural oscillations.

The logic was clearly flawed, but obviously Nature did not accepted any comment. The science is settled, and can’t be discussed.

Point? ..Don't buy Sallenger's book, ...worthless!

The blog post in the OP is, as we say in Britain, bollocks. It's got enough numbers to trick people, but would definitely fail a first year stats course.

Here and here are two posts by an actual statistician. It certainly looks like sea level rise has accelerated: from 1933-1999 it rose along the Atlantic coast at 2.9 mm/year but from 2000-2015 it's up to 4.8 mm/year. Need more stats to be sure, but satellites show that real sea level rise is now about twice the rate it was last century.

Nature Climate Change has a stringent review process. You need to meet minimum standards of quality, and based on the quality of the whining I've seen about science it's unlikely they met it.

The sinusoidal argument sounds good, but you need to come up with a physical reason or independent evidence for it. In 5 years' time it'll be a 70-year sine wave, and in a decade they'll be talking about the 80-year sine wave. You can always invent some magic cycle to hide what's going on in the real world. The anti-science bloggers have promised us global cooling since at least 2006 and that sea level rise stopped since at least 2008.

As much of Louisiana and Florida are evacuated will you be cheering? Will you support taxpayer bailouts of the pension and insurance companies as the coastal property bubble pops? Or will you just pop a thrilled boner at the following financial crisis and suffering of your fellow Americans?

No, they should have never insured localities that disproportionately vote democrat. It will be highly satisfying when these coastal progressives lose their homes.

Much of Arizona previously was under the ocean surface...Does this mean in the long term that ocean surface levels are drastically falling ???............. :dunno:

Here is something NONE of you is even thinking about...

NEW YORK HARBOR is a Tidal Estuary of the Hudson River.

That river drops millions of tons of sediment into its Delta every year.. Raising the Bottom of the Hudson River...

The Hudson and east Rivers are much shallower now then they were 400 years ago...

The water level isnt rising....but the bottom of the River is...

Uh huh, so you think "screw you" to anyone who lives in an area that voted for democrats? All of Louisiana's coastal parishes voted for Romney over Obama. Are you going to be thrilled when their home values are ruined because a minority voted for Obama?

I think more American voters need to understand that this is the attitude of climate obstructionists.

Sea levels are rising globally. Satellites carry lasers that they bounce of the water surface like a radar to work out how high it is. It's clear that global water levels are rising, but local effects depend on things like sediment, rocks bouncing up due to changing weight loads etc.

Since 2000, Atlantic city has seen more flood days every single year than it used to see in an entire decade. Similar stories are happening all over the place and Miami Beach has had to stump up $5.5k for each person living there for new flood defences and pumps.

We need to take the risk of sea level rise acceleration seriously. Don't subsidise insurance on new properties in these areas and forcing new buyers to take it on at market rates would be a start. Setting it up so that federal funds favour long-term solutions like abandoning the lowest areas would be something else to look at. The National Flood Insurance Program already owes taxpayers about $20bn and costs will soar without reform. People are going to get seriously pissed off with constantly bailing out coast livers in Texas and Florida otherwise - they should be taking more responsibility.

SCIM.... Atlantic City is not the victim of Rising water... but a lack of dredging due to poor tidal outflow from the bays around it..

Reeds Bay and Absecon Bay have very poor drainage and they havent been dredged properly in many years.

As bays fill with Silt, Water levels rise. These bays have been ignored for almost a century. It was made worse in 2012 when Hurricane Sandy pushed huge amounts of sand and sediment into the back bays... worsening the problem.

Silting and erosion are natural occurrences in and around coastal waterways.. Maintaining dredging and removal of accumulated silts is the only way to keep water levels down naturally, Or you build up huge barriers to stop the flooding and raise the level of the land.

The ocean level itself hasn't risen appreciably, but the silt deposits on the bottom of the Bays and river has.

You cant dredge an entire bay... it is impossible...

This is a problem mariners have faced for centuries...

eventually Reeds Bay and Absecon Bay will fill up and become wetlands...

That is Nature... Not climate change...

Do you think the scientists behind the journal "Sedimentology" or the "International Journal of River Basin Management" who did a special issue with sea level rise in know less about sea level and sediments than you? I think you might have missed reading some of the science, such as this paper that says "Local sea level anomalies can also arise from direct anthropogenic effects such as groundwater withdrawal and dredging."

We've measured the sea level rising with satellites: it's rising about an inch every 8 years, which is about 100% faster than last century. Do you think that the satellites are wrong? Why?

Also, I don't quite see why silting up a bay will cause massive problems for flooding nearby unless the silt blocks river outflow. Water is pretty fluid. If you build up the bottom of an estuary then it flows out to sea because gravity. That's why the ocean isn't stuck to the top of hills.

Bupkis! Double bupkis....!

Let's go back to the original point of this thread: There has been no accelerated increase in water levels for the past 50 years. None. Nada. Nichts. Ueberhaupt nichts! Nothing.

The sea levels have been on a very MILD upward slope of increase for centuries. That's it. There has been NO change to the very, very gentle rise in sea levels. The NOAA tidal gauge measurements. 200 coastal locations. This was the quote from the above referenced thread:

Quote:

In all more than 200 coastal locations are included in these measurements with more than 100 of these coastal locations with recorded data periods in excess of 50 years in duration. None of these updated NOAA tide gauge measurement data records show coastal location sea level rise acceleration occurring anywhere on the U.S. coasts or Pacific or Atlantic island groups.

You lose!

No sea level rise. Nothing. No global warming, ....all of it a 1.5 trillion dollar fraud. (period)

Again, from the lead article...

Quote:

Its now been 28 years since the conjecture of these early sea level rise climate alarmist claims was presented to Congress. However the latest updated NOAA coastal tide gauge measurement data shows locations likely to experience only inches of sea level rise by mid century (not one to four feet as climate alarmists speculated to Congress in 1998) with that increase consistent with long standing and unchanging rates of sea level rise measured at these coastal locations. The longest NOAA tide gauge data record is at the Battery, New York with a 160 year long measurement period. This location along with all other U.S. coastal locations show no sea level rise acceleration.

Climate alarmists continue to try and mislead the public by claiming that the Statue of Liberty is in “imminent jeopardy” because of rising sea levels but the unchanging rate of sea level rise present at the Battery would require more than 20,000 years to cover the base (https://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/08/20/national-geographics-junk-science-how-long-will-it-take-for-sea-level-rise-to-reach-midway-up-the-statue-of-liberty/). That time period hardly qualifies as “imminent jeopardy”.

The Statue of Liberty in imminent jeopardy? Really now....

NO sea level rise! Why? No global warming....!
