Excellent article Che.
Old (1987) Gordon Gekko's "greed is good" sermon was embraced by many and we're seeing the results.
Time for some serious rethink, me thinks.

Neoliberalism has a relation to capitalism somewhat parallel to the relation between Stalinism and Marxism. In both cases, a single force (the market in the former, central planning in the latter) are identified as the sole driver of the system and all sense of moderation and balance is thrown out the window.

The article, a good one BTW, is strictly about economics. To get more of the parallel between neoliberalism and Stalinism one has to consider the vast amount of bloodshed and suffering inflicted by the hawkish imperialism of the neoliberal approach. Economics kills people.

Unfortunately the author does not remind the reader that “classical liberalism” died with the world economic crash in the late 1920s and “socialist planning” died with the break-up of the Soviet Union.

There isn’t any economic model left.

Michetti says economic recovery will take place ‘next year’
Gov’t: lower-middle class bearing heaviest burden of austerity
Quote:

Vice-President Gabriela Michetti yesterday acknowledged that the lower-middle class is experiencing the greatest burden of the Let’s Change (Cambiemos) administration’s economic policies, but anticipated that the light at the end of the tunnel is nearing.

With those remarks, the vice-president echoed the line of PRO-allied economist Javier González Fraga, who last week blamed the previous Victory Front (FpV) administration for implementing “populist measures” that gave the working class an unsustainable standard of living.

“They lied to the people by telling them they could live like that forever because we have the resources for that,” Michetti told Radio Nacional.

While the Let’s Change leader recognized that the current situation was hard for many people, and would continue being so in the near future, she said that the most difficult part was leaving “the lie of populism.”

González Fraga made similar comments on Friday, when he criticized former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s government for promoting policies — which he believed to be unsustainable consumption — that allowed the middle class to purchase mobile phones, plasma TVs and travel abroad.

"Mobile phones? Plama TVs? Travels? I'm going to give you!"
