UNITED NATIONS — Alarmed at the spread of a Palestinian campaign to boycott Israel and particularly its resonance on college campuses, the Israeli Mission to the United Nations and World Jewish Congress held a conference on Tuesday aimed at galvanizing support for an effective countermessage. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/01/world/middleeast/israel-boycott-divestment-sanctions.html?ref=world |

The movement started on college campuses in the USA with the South Africa boycott as a model. Israel claims that the idea comes from the Palestinian Authority, which is doubtful, although Palestinian students in the USA have been involved in organization etc. The Israel counter-propaganda attack, "Build Bridges Not Boycotts," is a sign that the BDS movement is beginning to hurt and is taken seriously by AIPAC and the Likud government. While it seems unlikely that BDS is going to provoke any significant change in government policy in the immediate future, it is a sign that leftist kids are swinging into line with their EU counterparts etc. I'll leave it Mr. Stout to dismiss the whole enterprise with a comic one-liner, but there is a trend here worth thinking about: As support for Israel morphs into support for Likud, the bipartisan nature of the American alliance is shifting rapidly into a partisan issue. This is something Israel has feared and sought to prevent since the beginning. The catalyst for this important change seems to be Netanyahu's heavy-handed meddling in US congressional politics, a move which provoked displeasure on both sides of the aisle. Bernie Sanders has brought the issue of justice for the Palestinians into the presidential campaign as never before. He is insulated against the standard defensive cry of anti-Semitism as not other presidential candidate in US history, Obama has tried to remain above the fray, but Kerry has expressed the administration's frustration in careful but unprecedented terms. Hillary drew fire years ago as the first major American political figure to come out for the then-radical "two-state solution" including Palestinian access to Jerusalem. Her subsequent speeches have deepened the distinction between Israel as an American ally and the Likud Party with its open violation of agreements and unprecedented attacks on a sitting American administration. Smart friends of Israel in the USA are increasingly concerned about the Likud confrontation with Obama. Israelis, even conservative Israeli political leaders, have express growing alarm at Bibi's desperate rightward drift Everyone understands that the USA is all that stands between Israel and the angry condemnation of the rest of the world. No one in the West is talking about wiping Israel off the map; Wiping Israel back to the Taba borders is a real and popular position, one which would be extremely difficult for Israel financially and internally. Funny response, anyone? anyone? |
