Brazil's impeachment trial to run into Rio Olympics
Quote:

The impeachment trial of Brazil's suspended President Dilma Rousseff will conclude in the middle of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August, according to a timeline decided on Monday by the Senate impeachment commission.
Quote:

The decision was a setback for the new administration which is keen to get Temer confirmed quickly to give him authority to adopt tough austerity measures Brazil's needs to plug a huge fiscal deficit and get the economy growing again.

There are concerns that doubts about Temer's legitimacy could dissuade some heads of states from attending the Aug. 5 opening of the Olympics.

Brazil prosecutor seeks arrest of top politicians, media report
Quote:

Brazil's chief prosecutor Rodrigo Janot is seeking permission to have top politicians from the governing PMDB party arrested, Brazilian media say.

The politicians he wants held are Brazil's ex-President Jose Sarney, Senate Speaker Renan Calheiros, ex-lower house Speaker Eduardo Cunha and PMDB leader Romero Juca.

The four are suspected of obstructing a massive corruption investigation.

A Supreme Court judge will now have to decide whether to act on the request.

Poll shows majority of Brazilians want new elections
Quote:

More than a quarter of Brazilians view interim President Michel Temer's government negatively and a majority want new elections this year, according to a poll on Wednesday that suggested scandals and policy reversals had dented his popularity.

Temer's government, which began on May 12 when Brazil's Senate suspended leftist President Dilma Rousseff for breaking budget laws, received a negative rating from 28 percent of Brazilians, according to the CNT/MDA poll.

Only 11.3 percent of those questioned gave it a positive rating, while 30.2 percent found it "regular".
