Turkey has arrested 6,000 people after a failed coup, with President Erdogan vowing to purge state bodies of the "virus" that caused the revolt.

Mr Erdogan's top military aide Col Ali Yazici is among those now in custody.

The overall death toll for the weekend violence has risen to 290, the foreign ministry said. More than 100 of those were participating in the coup.

Security forces are reported to have met resistance from some coup plotters who were being arrested.

Warning shots were fired at Istanbul's second largest airport, and also at a military base in central Konya province, unnamed officials said.

This is exactly how it's going to be if conservatives try it in the US.

Erdogan is using this as an excuse to round up all his perceived political enemies, regardless of whether they were involved or not.

Absolutely agreed. He is a ruthless dictator; but, Turkey is a NATO-member nevertheless.

Yeah- this is a country the fools in Brussels wanted to admit.

Turkey has been trying to join the EU since years; their bad human-rights records did not allow for that.

Their Islamic heritage should have been sufficient. That it was not reveals the EU as an enemy of Europe.

Turkey failed coup: Presidential guard to be disbanded
Quote:

Turkey's elite presidential guard is to be disbanded after nearly 300 of its members were detained following last week's failed coup.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told a TV channel that there was "no need" for the regiment.

Earlier, Turkey detained a nephew of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen who, it says, was behind the uprising. He strongly denies the claim.

A key aide of Mr Gulen has also been arrested, a presidency official said.

Turkish president gains upper hand in power struggle
Quote:

At the crossroads between a divided Europe and a convulsed Middle East, Turkey is caught in a power struggle between former Islamist allies which is shaking democratic institutions and raises questions about its future path.

Since a failed coup on July 15, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) founded by President Tayyip Erdogan has gained the upper hand in its battle with clandestine networks in the military, judiciary and bureaucracy loyal to U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen.

This fight to the bitter end has alarmed the West and unsettled the country of 80 million, which borders the chaos in Iraq and Syria and is a Western ally against Islamic State.

Turkey's Erdogan slams West for failure to show solidarity over coup attempt
Quote:

President Tayyip Erdogan condemned Western countries on Friday for failing to show solidarity with Turkey over the recent failed coup, saying those who worried over the fate of coup supporters instead of Turkish democracy could not be friends of Ankara.

Erdogan also rejected Western criticism of purges under way in Turkey's military and other state institutions which saw more than 60,000 people detained, removed or suspended over suspected links with the coup attempt, suggesting some in the United States were on the side of the plotters.

Turkey's anti-Gulen crackdown ripples far and wide
Quote:

Barely 12 hours after a failed coup in Turkey, Somalia's cabinet met in Mogadishu to consider a request from Ankara to shut down two schools and a hospital linked to Fethullah Gulen, the Muslim cleric Turkey blames for the attempted putsch.

Such is Turkey's sway in the Horn of Africa nation, where it has spearheaded international reconstruction efforts after decades of war and instability, it was not a difficult decision.

Turkey kills 35 militants after they try to storm base, officials say
Quote:

Turkey's army killed 35 Kurdish militants after they attempted to storm a base in the southeastern Hakkari province early on Saturday, military officials said.

The overnight attack came hours after clashes in Hakkari's Cukurca district between soldiers and militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that left eight soldiers dead, the officials said.
