As of 2006 only 58% of Chilean workers pay into the individual account pension system, with many others avoiding paying the required full 10% of their income....Those who worked 20 years and fully paid into their individual pension account, retire well at age 65....Because so many avoided paying, the average pension is $315/month....Since 2008, others get a government welfare alternative (SPS) of $140/month.....Chile can not afford a nation of pet hamsters who demand more 401K like money when they didn't save squat during their working lives....

This reminds me of a friend of mine who was a self employed landscape architect almost all his life, never paid into social security or even paid income taxes....He went to social security office to begin getting social security old age benefits.....He was told he was not eligible for any, but he could get SSI (welfare for the elderly) of $530/month....Shocked that his lifetime of "gaming the system" had created a life of poverty in old age, he dropped over dead two weeks later from a heart attack.....I also know a couple truck drivers who thought they were slick by being "independent contractors", avoiding social security taxes, and now lament having small social security checks in old age.....

Of course stupidity will always draw a huge crowd of protestors....Especially when they can try to blame others for their own mistakes.................... :oyvey

Something tells me these people want to become the government's pet hamsters....They see no dignity in saving for their own retirement......... :dunno:
