http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/26/politics/china-us-navy-chief-south-china-sea/index.html The U.S. will continue freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea, a senior Navy officer says, as the region continues to react to a landmark Hague ruling on territorial claims in the disputed waters. The Obama administration has made it "absolutely clear" to China that the U.S. will continue engaging in flights and naval activities in the disputed waters despite objections from Beijing, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mark Richardson said Tuesday. |

Naval demonstrations are a time-honored stage on which to enact international confrontation. The drama goes back as far as the Spanish Armada. It has several advantages to protagonists like the USA and China. First, it is a very expensive game to play, which keeps second-class nations off the stage. Second, naval forces are disciplined and professional, lessening the risk of accidental escalation and things getting out of control, always a danger with land armies. Third, the events occur over the horizon and out of view of citizens and the media, making political manipulations a snap. Fourth, caualties, should they occur, are small in comparison with land war and so are easier for the govrnments to manage. We should expect a long-term, off-again-on-again confrontation with China's navy. It's not great, but it is a lot better than using land forces or -- God forbid! -- nuclear forces for the purpose. |

Good points but if casualties occur they'll lead to bigger escalation. And this doesn't improve relationships. |

Is there any reason the US should not be able to sail in the South China Sea? I'll say we make a deal with China. They stay away from the Pacific and US will not sail in the South China Sea. Besides, China is making more enemies than friends. India will not back down like China's smaller neighbors. Indonesia needs to grow a spine. |

It is an historical fact worth pondering that nothing in the long history of China shows any interest in invading and conquering non-Chinese people. This national trait contrasts strongly with Western tradition, which goes back to the Trojan War in a long string of invasions and annexations. Israel is the most recent and probably the last such incident. China shows no interest in the conquest of non-Chinese. We are hassling them off their shores; they aren't going to reciprocate. |

They are not an alliance. Russia needs to piggy off China to show some muscles. By doing so, Putin only exposes his weakness for relying on China to send a message to the West. |

Just wondering why, if this is true, there's nothing on the web about it besides your post, which we here have all learned to disregard as caca. Got anything else? |

No, I'm not stupid, but I have to wonder if you are. Give us a list of non-Chinese nations invaded by China or I will have to conclude that you are really, really un-smart. Pathetic little fellow |

So you figured out that by me saying "China to US: We'll being Operations in the Gulf of Mexico." that I meant that China was going to begin operations in our very own Gulf of Mexico?? Hey Professor... GOT IQ? |

Gunboat diplomacy works better when the other side does not have an effective navy...China is developing more missiles that can wipe the 7th fleet off the surface of the Pacific....The Chinese are not impressed by our navy drive-by without shots being fired............. :oyvey |

Gotta admit "We'll being Operations" had me fooled. Why did you capitalize "Operations"? What does "We'll being" mean in English? Trump's base are angry white dudes who never made it to college. Why do want to draw attention to that embarrassing limitation? Edited by George Aligator, Jul 28 2016, 06:24 PM.

Most of the posters insightful enough to see that a post is not by the "real" George Aligator keep this fact to themselves. If trolls like Robert Stout realized that their posts are being squelched by an illegal immigrant using Google translator and the Troll-B-Gone software they would flee to some other bbs and unitedstates.com would begin massive layoffs. Please, save our jobs! Most of us have families to support. |
