The Obama administration said on Wednesday that $400 million in cash paid to Iran soon after the release of five Americans detained by Tehran was not ransom for them as some Republicans have charged.

The five, including Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian, were released on Jan. 16 in exchange for seven Iranians held in the United States for sanctions violations. The prisoner deal coincided with the lifting of international sanctions against Tehran.

At the time, the United States said it had settled a longstanding Iranian claim at the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal in The Hague, releasing $400 million in funds frozen since 1981, plus $1.3 billion in interest that was owed to Iran.

There is no coincidence, there is a treaty. Release of the frozen Iranian funds was a key sweetener in the nuclear treaty. Everybody knew this; the Republicans howled about it as part of their opposition before the treaty was ratified. Calling the froen funds ransom churns up the low information voters of the GOP base but it is just another silly lie that makes the party look ignorant.

The money was paid to the USA for an arms package ordered by the Shah, peace be upon him. When our ally, the Shah lost the Mandate of Heaven, delivery of the arms package was halted and when diplomatic relations were severed following the embassy hostage taking, the refund was frozen. Releasing the frozen funds was a part of the Irand nuclear deal. Calling the refund a ransom is the sort of thing we have come to expect from the GOP.

The fact is, Iran is a naturally ally of the USA and a potentially valuable one at that. Uncle Sam is being led around by the nose and the othr end of the rope is in the hands of Bibi Netanyahu. Israel wants the US to declare war and invade Iran. It brings a tear to the eye to hear the Likud Glee Club singing Onward, Christian Soldiers!

Fine, give them the $400 million back but no need for the $1.3 billion in interest, which is contrary to sharia banking law anyway. That was where the ransom came in.

They were entitled to interest which adds up on $400 million.

"Entitled?" I think not. That was a giveaway. We didn't even have to give them the $400 million. They were doing so well under the sanctions.

And look up usury under sharia law and report back.
