Programmable quantum computer can solve simple algorithms, scientists prove

Sarah Knapton, Science Editor

A fully reprogrammable quantum computer which can solve simple algorithms had been shown to work, in a milestone which could eventually lead to super-fast machines.

The University of Maryland build the computer using just five electrically charged atoms, or ions, which took the place of normal bits.

Because the ions can exist in more than one state at the same time, they have vastly greater processing capacity than traditional computer bits.

Conventional computers use long strings of ones and zeroes representing "on" or "off" states to store numbers, letters and symbols and perform calculations.

In contrast, a quantum computer "qubit" can be a zero or a one or any combination of the two simultaneously.
